CATDOLL: Collection and cultivation of Daphnia

1. Collection and cultivation of Daphnia

After collecting Daphnia from the river, they should be placed in a larger glass tank. Some water brought back from the river and green algae, such as Spirogyra, should be placed in the tank to increase the oxygen in the water. Some minced meat made from earthworms, locusts or other animals should also be placed as bait for Daphnia. When the number of Daphnia increases, they should be collected in time and dried. In late autumn and winter, the reproduction capacity of Daphnia is greatly weakened. In winter, when Daphnia are not seen in the water tank, do not pour out the water in the tank, because they are all lurking in the green algae. We can put the water tank in a sunny room or near the radiator. In spring, when the indoor temperature rises, Daphnia come out to move again. When the room temperature rises above 28℃, Daphnia begin to reproduce in large numbers. Daphnia can be used to raise hydra for teaching.

2. How to cultivate Daphnia and how long does it take to cultivate it?

Daphnia is a small crustacean, which is easy to cultivate. Bottles, cans, and tanks can be used for small-scale breeding; earthen ponds and cement ponds can be used for large-scale breeding. Breeding water temperature: 18-25℃; pH value: 7.5-8.0; dissolved oxygen saturation is usually 70-120%; organic oxygen consumption is 20mg/L. Under normal circumstances, the pond water should be yellow-brown and the water transparency should be maintained at about 30cm. If the water color is too clear, more fertilizer should be applied. If the water color is dark brown or black brown, less fertilizer or no fertilizer should be applied. When applying topdressing, multiple fertilizers should be used crosswise (manure, ammonia fertilizer, nitrogen fertilizer, phosphate fertilizer, etc.), and do not use a single fertilizer, so as to maintain a dynamic balance of various elements in the water.

Generally, indoor cultivation is less affected by weather changes, and the cultivation conditions are easier to control. The disadvantage is that it can only be produced in small quantities. Wooden barrels, glass jars and other containers that can hold a certain volume of water can be used as cultivation equipment. When cultivating, first inject clean water (natural water or tap water) into the culture vessel, and after exposure to the sun for 3 to 4 days, add 1.5kg/L of fresh horse manure, 20g of fertile soil, and 2g of straw or other stems and leaves of non-toxic plants. Manure and soil can be added directly. Cut the grass into pieces and boil it. Then stir it with a wooden stick and let it stand for 2 days. Catch Daphnia from ponds or small rivers and ditches for introduction, and put them into the pond after cleaning and disinfection. When the water temperature is 18 to 25℃, Daphnia begin to reproduce in large numbers after about 3 to 4 days.

3. How to breed water lice at home!

The water should be green, the water temperature should be above 20 degrees, do not place it under the light, and the breeding density should be sparse.

Water lice belong to the class Crustacea of the phylum Arthropoda. They are aquatic crustaceans, very small, suitable for feeding ornamental fish, and are also one of the important foods for ornamental fish breeding.

Habitat: Lives on still water or slow-flowing streams.

Appearance characteristics: The body is slender and very light; the front legs are short and can be used to catch prey; the middle and hind legs are very slender, with fine oily hairs that are waterproof. The body color is dark brown and the body length is about 22mm.

Food source: body fluids of small insects that have fallen into the water or dead fish. When eating, the mouth is in a tube shape and it sucks food.

They usually live in groups and can be seen all year round in parts of southern my country. Female water striders lay their eggs on plants or underwater dead branches and leaves. After the eggs hatch, the nymphs first sink to the bottom of the water and soon float to the surface. They move very fast on the water surface as other individuals move. The female dies soon after laying eggs.

The water should be green, the water temperature should be above 20 degrees, do not place it under the light, and the breeding density should be sparse.

After a few days, you will be able to see a full tank of Daphnia.

Just use green water and don't worry about it.
