1. What should I do if the soil for raising earthworms is a bit dry?Water it appropriately to moisten it. 2. How do earthworms survive drought?Earthworms usually live in moist soil. When the surface soil dries up, they will move deeper into the soil. They cannot survive in dry soil. When the surface soil dries up, they will move deeper into the soil. There is no other way. In addition, earthworms will also move to the deep layer of the soil in winter and curl up their bodies to hibernate. 3. Do I need to buy something to spray the soil when raising earthworms?Natural terrestrial earthworms generally like to live in moist, loose soil rich in organic matter. When packing earthworms, you can consider leaf mold and garden soil as the main soil. You can usually use a spray bottle to spray the soil with water (keep the soil 30% to 50% moist, that is, it feels a little moist). Earthworms have a sensitive sense of taste, like sweet and sour food, and hate bitter taste. Occasionally, you can soak some sugar or bury a few sugar grains to supplement their nutrition. 4. Can earthworms be raised using rice water? You can buy an extra-large flowerpot to use as a container for raising earthworms. Of course, you can also use wooden boxes, clay pots, wooden barrels, porcelain pots, etc., but they need to be easy to penetrate water and breathable. I chose the flower pot because it is big enough and has holes at the bottom to allow water to seep in and air to pass through. 2. Select the base material for raising earthworms. The culture medium I chose is dry cow dung. I went to the mountains and fields to collect fermented, color-changed dry cow dung, put it in a flowerpot and soaked it in water for a day (the water should be moderate, just enough to wet everything), and then I crushed it with my hands and used it to raise earthworms. There are also many options, such as horse manure and pig manure. It is best not to use ordinary soil, especially soil with a lot of sand. This kind of soil is easy to compact, and the earthworms will become smaller and smaller. If you think cow dung is unhygienic, you can also choose softer garden soil. You can also mix shredded horse manure paper or straw paper soaked in water with garden soil, or mix garden soil with some sawdust. All of the above are good breeding base materials, but in the experiment I think cow manure is the best culture medium. 3. Earthworm seeds are the earthworms left over after fishing (bought in a fishing tackle store). I think this variety is more suitable. The largest can grow to 8 cm long and 3 mm thick. Generally, it is 4-6 cm and 2 mm thick. Never use earthworms dug from the vegetable field. If you can buy Daping No. 2, it will be better. 4. Feeding. It is very easy to find food for earthworms. Fruit peels, vegetable leaves, porridge, and rice water are all their food. If you feed the earthworms some animal blood, it will increase the bloody smell and their color will be brighter. The feed I use is the tea leaves left after brewing tea. Feeding earthworms with it will make the earthworms redder. 5. Management. The most suitable living temperature for earthworms is about 20 degrees Celsius. They will hibernate below 5 degrees and die below 0 degrees. They can reproduce normally at 15 degrees. If the temperature exceeds 33 degrees, they will crawl away or die. Therefore, when raising earthworms, you must choose a suitable temperature environment. In addition to paying attention to rain and sun protection, maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity, and feeding in time, you should also pay attention to cleaning the earthworms' excrement in a timely manner. Replace part of the base material about half a year and add another part of new base material. 6. Several issues to pay attention to. 1. Food fermentation needs to release heat, so the feed should be fermented before feeding to avoid heat in the breeding container that affects the survival of the earthworms. The feeding time should be controlled according to the earthworms' eating habits. Generally, the higher the temperature, the more food they eat and the more frequently they are fed. Feed them about once every half a month when the temperature is 10-25 degrees. 2. It is best to change the culture medium once a year. When changing it, patiently select the earthworms and cocoons (light yellow and translucent things like half the size of a mung bean. Each cocoon can hatch 2-4 earthworms), pour out the old culture medium, replace it with new culture medium, pour in the earthworms, and bury the cocoons. 3. When breeding earthworms, a certain amount of moisture must be maintained. If it is too dry, they will die, and if it is too wet, they will have difficulty surviving. We often see that after a heavy rain, a large amount of rainwater seeps into the ground, and many earthworms are dug out from the deep soil until they are dried out and die. This is the reason. Generally, keep the culture medium until it can be kneaded into a ball but no water can be squeezed out. 4. Pay attention to ventilation and air permeability, rodent prevention and pest prevention in daily management. The box should be covered to provide sunshade and rain protection in summer and heat preservation and cold protection in winter. 5. Why do earthworms die when they dry out?The water content of earthworms is about 80%. If earthworms cannot get enough water in the soil, they will stop moving when they leave the water. If the soil is too dry, earthworms will die. Water earthworms are mostly caught in shallow waters of river branches and silt ponds. Use a fine-mesh scoop net to scoop from the surface of the riverbed silt and two centimeters below the mud. There are a lot of water earthworms in the residue obtained after rinsing in water. Collect enough mud and earthworm mixture and place it in a large basin, fill it with water, cover it with a lid and shade it. When the water earthworms are enriched on the water surface, scoop them out by hand. When the earthworms are gone, only water and mud will be left. 6. How to raise small white earthworms?1. The earthworm breeding box should be deep Earthworms live in the soil for a long time. If you want to breed them, you need to prepare a deep and large enough activity space for them so that they can grow well. To raise earthworms at home as bait, you can use a large footbath with a few small holes drilled in the bottom for water to drain. The breeding farm needs to order a large breeding box. 2. Control the moisture of the soil Earthworms like to burrow in the soil, and if the soil is too dry, earthworms cannot survive. So be sure to keep the soil moist. Water it regularly, or water the soil with broth without salt. 3. Earthworms are carnivorous animals The main food of earthworms is meat. Leftover fat, shrimp shells, chicken bones, vegetable peels and residues from cooking can all be crushed and mixed into the soil to feed earthworms. If it is feed such as meat and bones, bury it in the soil so that flies will not be attracted. 4. Get some sun every day Earthworms like a moist and warm environment. They cannot be placed in a shaded area all the time. They cannot be placed in the sun all the time. Spend a certain amount of time every day to move the breeding box to the sun and heat it up for two hours through the sunshade. 5. Clean feces regularly Earthworms plow, eat, and defecate in the soil. If there is too much feces, it will affect their ability to "find their way home." Spend a certain amount of time every day flushing water into the breeding basin (box), and the earthworm feces will float up and be cleaned out. 6. Loosen the soil for earthworms After cleaning the breeding box and flushing it with water, you should loosen the soil in time to let the water seep out from the sand at the bottom of the box. This will prevent the baby earthworms from being soaked in water and causing them discomfort. Be careful not to hurt the earthworms. 7. Fermented feed is best for feeding earthworms If you don't mind the trouble, you can grind bone residue, fat and vegetable shells into powder and ferment them with the remaining milk. Pour a small amount into the culture medium at a time and feed the earthworms slowly. The earthworms will be fatter than those directly mixed with kitchen waste. 7. How to remedy the situation when earthworms are dried up?When earthworms become dry, it is usually because of high temperature. In order to survive, earthworms will excrete water from their bodies to moisturize their skin and avoid dehydration. However, the water content in earthworms' bodies is limited after all, and they will definitely not be able to withstand it for a long time. When storing, you can use a box or something like that to avoid light, or put it in a cool place. Then artificially create a moist environment, such as adding moist soil, or non-woven fabric with some water (poor quality paper towels will easily fall apart after soaking in water for a long time), and put the earthworms on it. If you fish for a long time, just add a little water from time to time. 8. How to dig earthworms in the dry season?1. Digging method: Choose a place with rich humus, fertile, moist and loose soil, such as a vegetable garden, and use a shovel to turn the soil and collect. 2. Watering method. Earthworms are afraid of water. If you water the fields where there are a lot of earthworms, the earthworms will quickly come out of the soil. 3. Picking method: Earthworms like to live in dark environments. In late spring, when it rains at night, you can go to the edge of the field at 3-4 o'clock in the morning and pick them up with a flashlight. 4. Trapping method. Earthworms like to eat fresh feed. We pile the fermented feed on the edge of the field where there are more earthworms. After 3-5 days, we can use a shovel to turn it over and collect the earthworms. |
