CATDOLL: What is the overview of oysters?

Oyster, referred to as "oyster". Class Ostridia, family Ostreida. A general term for animals of the phylum Mollusca, class Bivalvia, order Heterocolum, family Ostridia. Also known as oyster, oyster roe, and sea oyster. The shell is irregular, large and heavy; the left shell (or "lower shell") is larger and more concave, attached to other objects; the right shell (or "upper shell") is smaller, covering like a lid. It has no feet and byssus, distributed in tropical and temperate zones, and is produced in my country from the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea to the Nansha Islands, with about 20 species.

my country has a long history of oyster farming. In the Song Dynasty, there was a method of "raising oysters by inserting bamboo". Nowadays, there are many oysters in Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan. The meat is delicious and can be eaten raw or cooked. It is rich in protein and is known as "milk in the sea". It can also be processed into dried oysters, oyster sauce and canned products. The shell can be burned into lime. It is a human medicine in traditional Chinese medicine. It is slightly cold in nature and salty in taste. It has the functions of suppressing yang, consolidating and astringing, resolving phlegm and softening hard masses. It is mainly used to treat dizziness, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, and spermatorrhea.

Oysters are the main cultured shellfish. Oysters are widely distributed, from brackish water to seawater, from the intertidal zone to the seabed more than 10 meters below the low tide line. They live on rocks or shells in the sea with their left shells fixed to them, unable to move throughout their lives, and use their right shells to eat, breathe, reproduce, excrete, and defend against enemies. They are filter feeders, mainly feeding on tiny diatoms and organic debris.

When breathing, food flows into the mantle cavity through the water hole, and then is transported to the mouth through the vibration of the gills and cilia of the labia. Oysters are divided into hermaphrodites and dioecious, and there are sexual changes and male protandry. Reproduction can be divided into larval and oviparous types. After about one year of growth from the juveniles, they can reach sexual maturity and begin to reproduce. The breeding season is generally from June to September.

Species that grow in tropical areas can lay eggs and reproduce all year round. They lay a large number of eggs, ranging from several million to tens of millions, or even more than 100 million. The entire process from the fertilized eggs splitting and developing into planktonic larvae to metamorphosis and fixation into juvenile spat takes about 2 to 3 weeks.
