CATDOLL: Introduction to Atlantic Tarpon

1. Introduction of Atlantic Tarpon

The Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) has a short dorsal fin located in the middle of the body, a long anal fin, and a tail attached to the dorsal fin. The pectoral fins are poorly developed. The lateral line scales are tubular. The back is blue-gray with shiny silver edges. The large scales cover the side of the body from 93 to 107 cm and extend all the way to the tail. The closed body is long and powerful, and is a favorite sport fish for people. When hooked, it often jumps violently to break free. Adult tarpon can grow up to 2.4 meters and weigh up to 136 kilograms. As of 2012, the maximum weight published was 161 kilograms. Although it is called "tarpon", the Atlantic tarpon is a ferocious predator with a very majestic momentum, which is completely different from the silver carp, which feeds on diatoms. In fact, as an upper predator, its appearance is very similar to another famous upper hunter in freshwater, that is, the black carp. It is mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical shallow and silt waters near the Atlantic coast and the Pacific coast of Central America. It is sometimes seen in rivers and often floats to the surface to inhale and exhale air.

2. Does Taipan mullet eat feed?

No. The Taipan tarpon mainly feeds on zooplankton in the water and does not eat feed. The tarpon is a marine fish of the family Tarponidae and genus Tarpon. It has an elongated and laterally flattened body, a slightly taller body, a longer eye than the snout, a slightly superior mouth, and a more prominent lower jaw.

3. Artificial breeding of Atlantic tarpon

If I say "it's not difficult" to raise it, you will definitely find it strange: Isn't it a saltwater fish? Just getting a tank of saltwater is quite troublesome, right? Don't worry, in fact, the Atlantic tarpon has a "secret weapon" that has not yet appeared, that is, its "euryhaline nature". The so-called "euryhaline nature" refers to the ability of fish to adapt well to seawater of different salinities. To put it bluntly, it means that the Atlantic tarpon can live in seawater and freshwater, and live well. With this ability, your worries will be eliminated, right?

The most important thing to keep Atlantic tarpon is a large fish tank. This species is a ferocious hunter that cruises at high speed and attacks with great force. If the environment is too small, it will be "stifled". And it is good at hunting while chasing. Only a large fish tank can fully appreciate the scene of this silver missile rushing and killing.

Atlantic tarpon comes from the coastal areas of tropical and subtropical seas, so it needs hard water, pH 7.0-8.0, and temperature above 26°C. Since it likes to hide in mangroves with extremely low dissolved oxygen to find food when it is young, it is born with the ability to breathe air directly, so there is no need to worry too much about the oxygen content in the fish tank.

What you should really worry about is its jumping ability. The reason why the Atlantic tarpon has become a world-famous sport fish is because of its exciting jumping behavior after being hooked. The huge tarpon can jump up to two meters in height, and the continuous jumping seems to show its endless power, which is very shocking. Even in the fish tank, it still will not restrain its passionate personality, so covering the fish tank to prevent it from jumping out is also the top priority of the breeding essentials.
