Translation of the Biography of Jin Luxiang in the History of Yuan Dynasty

Jin Luxiang, courtesy name Jifu, was from Lanxi, Wu. He was smart and intelligent when he was young. He could memorize the books his father and elder brother taught him. As he grew older, he worked harder and harder. When he was a man, he learned the teachings of Xiang, Lian, and Luo, and served the same county king Bo. He became a disciple of He Ji. Ji studied under Huang Gan, and Gan was the one who inherited Zhu Xi's teachings. Since then, his studies have become more and more thorough, and his attainments have become more and more profound. At that time, the state affairs of Song Dynasty were no longer viable, so Luxiang gave up his ambition to make progress. However, he was responsible for the economic strategy, and he could not bear to forget this world. When the army in Xiangfan was getting more and more urgent, the people of Song Dynasty watched and did not dare to rescue. Luxiang proposed a strategy to contain and attack the enemy. He asked to send a large number of troops to cross Yan and Ji by sea, so that the army in Xiangfan would be relieved without attacking. He also described the sea vessels passing through all the prefectures, counties, and towns, and even the vast ocean islands, and the difficulties and distances, which could be used as a reference. Song Dynasty was ultimately unable to use it. Later, Zhu Xuan and Zhang Qing presented the benefits of sea transportation, and the sea routes they took were exactly the same as those written by Li Xiang before. Only then did people admire his accuracy. At the beginning of the Deyou period, he was appointed as a Digonglang and a proofreader of the History Museum, but he refused to accept the position. When the Song Dynasty was about to change things, thieves broke out everywhere, and Li Xiang lived in seclusion in the Jinhua Mountains. He was alone at ordinary times, and was solemn all day long; but when he came into contact with people, he was full of joy. He taught and taught the younger generation, earnestly and tirelessly, and was especially devoted to the division of righteousness. The son of an old friend was involved in a crime, and the mother and son were assigned to be slaves. They didn't know each other for ten years. Li Xiang spent all his money to buy the son and finally redeemed him. When his son became rich, Li Xiang never mentioned it. When they met, he just asked about his hard work. Li Xiang once said that Sima Wenzheng Gongguang wrote "Zizhi Tongjian" and Secretary Liu Shu wrote "Waiji" to record previous events, which were not based on the classics, but believed in the theories of hundreds of schools. Their right and wrong were wrong compared to the saints, and they were not worthy of being passed on. He took the Book of Documents as the main part, followed by the Book of Songs, the Book of Rites, and the Spring and Autumn Annals, and also collected the old histories and various philosophers, and listed the years and events, and concluded from Tang Yao onwards, and continued before the Comprehensive Mirror, and compiled it into a book called the Preface to the Comprehensive Mirror. He added explanations to all the books he quoted to correct their meanings, many of which were not discovered by Confucian scholars before. At first, when Lu Xiang met Wang Bo, he first asked about the way to study. Bo told him that he must first set his mind, and cited the words of the ancient Confucian scholars: be respectful to maintain your mind, set your mind to determine your foundation, set your mind on the surface of things, and be respectful to act on the inside of things. This is the great way to study. When he met He Ji, Ji said to him: "Hui Zhi has repeatedly talked about the virtues of the wise and the distinction between reason and desire. We should start from now on." Hui Zhi was probably the name of Bai. At that time, the debaters thought that Ji's purity and honesty were similar to Yin Hejing, and Bai's wisdom and uprightness were similar to Xie Shangcai. Lu Xiang personally learned from the two masters and added them to himself. Luxiang lived at the foot of Renshan Mountain, so scholars called him Renshan Master. He died in the middle of Dade. At the beginning of Yuantong, his fellow villager Wu Shidao became a doctor of the Imperial College, and he was transferred to the book school. He built a shrine for Luxiang in the village school. In the middle of Zhizheng, he was given the posthumous title of Wen'an. (Excerpt from "The History of Yuan Dynasty·Biography of Jin Luxiang") 8.
