SmartCat Ultimate: A Tall Woven-Sisal Scratching Post
A 32-inch upright scratcher with a broad base, best judged against your cat’s preferred texture and direction.

The SmartCat Ultimate is a straightforward upright scratching post: a tall rectangular scratching surface on a broad square base. Its appeal is the space to stretch vertically without adding a full climbing tower. This overview focuses on the product's construction and placement considerations, not a claimed test in our own household.
The size to plan around
The post is advertised at 32 inches high with an approximately 16-by-16-inch base. Those dimensions make it taller than many small starter scratchers, while still requiring a dedicated patch of floor. Mark the base footprint before buying and allow room for the cat to stand and reach. Avoid treating the space behind a door as usable floor if the door will repeatedly knock the post.
Texture is the main decision
The scratching surface is woven sisal. That is a distinct experience from corrugated cardboard, carpet or loosely wound rope, and individual cats respond differently. A cat that already enjoys firm vertical surfaces is a more obvious candidate than a cat that only scratches a horizontal cardboard pad. Even a well-built post cannot guarantee a change in texture preference.
Assembly and placement
The base is assembled with the supplied hardware. Follow the instructions so the fixings are correctly seated and the post stands securely. Inspect it again after initial use and during routine cleaning. Position it near an area your cat already visits or scratches, rather than hiding it where it is least visible. Let the cat explore and reward voluntary use without forcing the paws against the surface.
What it does and does not replace
The Ultimate offers a focused vertical scratching surface. It does not provide the varied levels and resting platforms of a full cat tree, and a horizontal scratcher may still be useful alongside it. Compare the usable height, stability and material with your cat's habits before prioritizing color. Retire or repair the product when wear exposes unsafe edges or hardware. A scratcher earns its place through comfortable repeated use, not by remaining untouched and looking new.
