CATDOLL: Methods and steps for lime disinfection of pig pens

Why do we need to disinfect pig pens?

The pigsty is the living environment for farmed pigs, and its hygiene is directly related to the health and growth of pigs. Regular disinfection of the pigsty can effectively kill germs, parasites and other harmful microorganisms, prevent the spread of diseases, and improve the production efficiency of pigs.

Advantages of lime as a pigpen disinfectant

Lime is a common disinfectant widely used in agriculture and aquaculture. It has the following advantages:

  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal: Lime can kill a variety of bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pathogens.
  • Cheap and Available: Lime is a cheap disinfectant and is easily available in rural areas.
  • No residue: Lime itself is non-toxic and harmless, and can be easily decomposed into harmless substances after use.

Steps for using lime to disinfect pig pens

Here are the steps to use lime to disinfect a pig pen:

Step 1: Clean the pigsty

First, clean up the pig manure, residual feed and other debris in the pigpen, and ensure that the surface of the pigpen is dry.

Step 2: Prepare lime solution

Take an appropriate amount of lime powder and stir it in water to dissolve it to make a lime solution. Generally, you need to add about 2-4 kg of lime to 10 liters of water.

Step 3: Spray lime solution

Use a sprayer or spraying tool to evenly spray the lime solution on the walls, ground and various facilities in the pig pen. Make sure that the lime solution can fully cover the entire surface of the pig pen.

Step 4: Keep the pigsty dry

Lime can absorb moisture and increase the dryness of the pigsty, which is conducive to the killing of pathogens. Therefore, after spraying the lime solution, make sure that the pigsty can remain dry.

Step 5: Repeat disinfection

If there is a serious epidemic or contamination in the pigpen, it is recommended to disinfect it multiple times. Generally speaking, it is sufficient to repeat the disinfection every 15-20 days.

Precautions after disinfection

After disinfection, the pigsty needs to be closed for a period of time to ensure that the lime solution can fully exert its bactericidal effect. Before the pigs live in the pigsty, they must be closely observed to ensure that the pigsty is odor-free, dry, and free of pests and diseases. At the same time, the dirt in the pigsty must be cleaned regularly to keep the pigsty clean and hygienic.

By using lime to disinfect pig pens, the spread of diseases in the pig pens can be effectively prevented, breeding efficiency can be improved, and better economic benefits can be brought to farmers.
