Local customs and practices In the early years, there was a water dragon club in our ancient city. There were many water dragons, all hidden in temples in the city, such as Qinghe Temple, Yupeng Temple, Xuandi Temple, and Cuiwang Temple. Every year, no matter whether there was any situation outside, they would come out for a gathering and compete with each other. On the black wooden gates of the temples where the water dragons were hidden, the four characters "Taiping Gongsuo" were prominently written. This was an amateur firefighting team composed of strong young people, who voluntarily took on the responsibility of firefighting in the city and suburbs. The water dragon is a manually operated water pump, and the faucet is a water gun that sprays water. In order to give people a sense of constant vigilance, the water dragons are painted in a fiery red color all over. In addition to the water dragons, there are also many water buckets. These water buckets are different from the ordinary water buckets. The semi-circular barrels are hung on the wall in a stable and neat shape (taken down when in use). The three characters "Taiping Tong" are written on the barrel surface of the semi-circular barrels that are all in a fiery red color. The Water Dragon Club gathers once a year in an open space. The water dragons from all the temples gather together and spray the enemy (fire) disguised by stacking firewood high. The young men wear rattan hats and leggings, and move quickly to be the first to spray water. The water dragon is a double-cylinder pressure pump with thick pressure rods on both sides. It takes seven or eight people to squeeze it up and down. The faster the squeezing, the higher the water pressure. The higher the water pressure, the more powerful, far-reaching and accurate the shot will be. There are so many water dragons, and the young men squeeze up and down desperately. The water dragons spray water, interweaving into a dense water network in the air, which is spectacular. The water shoots directly onto the fire, making a hissing sound, which wins cheers from the onlookers. The young men's amazing and outstanding performance will also win the favor and admiration of the girls. The elderly still have the ancient style, smiling and talking about the scene and their own style in the past. The activities of the Water Dragon Club are held in August and September. In fact, this is a field test of whether the water dragon can be used normally and an observation exercise of people's actual proficiency in using the water dragon. In the early years, the period before and after the New Year was generally a period of frequent fires among residents. Choosing this period to hold activities is actually a preparatory work for residents in case of fire during the New Year period, always being prepared and ready. In the early years, in the empty spaces between the streets and alleys of the ancient city, you would often find a half-person-high pool covered with stone slabs to prevent children from falling in. This was the Water Dragon Club. The pool prepared for use was called the Taiping Pool, which could be opened and used at any time if something happened. Now, the Water Dragon Society has disappeared with the development of history, but its role in fire protection in the early years of the ancient city is still indispensable.
