Are soft-shell turtle, round fish and tortoise the same animal?

Turtle (also called soft-shelled turtle, water fish, commonly known as turtle)

It is a species of Chinese soft-shelled turtle of the family Testudinidae. It is distributed in various parts of my country and can be caught from March to September. Turtle meat, turtle head, turtle blood, turtle fat, turtle gall, turtle eggs, and the glue made from the carapace, turtle shell glue, and turtle shell are all used for medicinal purposes. [Nature and flavor] It tastes sweet and salty, and is neutral in nature.

The tortoise (Chinemys reevesii), also known as the golden tortoise, grass tortoise, mud tortoise and mountain tortoise, belongs to the class Reptilia, family Testudinidae and subfamily Testudininae in animal taxonomy. It is one of the most common testudinidae. Tortoises are distributed almost everywhere in my country, but the production is higher in the provinces in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River; they are also produced in various parts of Guangxi, especially in southeastern Guangxi and southern Guangxi; they are mainly distributed in Japan and North Korea abroad.

The tortoise shell is slightly flat, the dorsal and ventral carapaces are fixed and immobile, the carapace is 10-12 cm long and about 15 cm wide, with three longitudinal ridges. There are yellow linear markings on the sides of the head and neck, the limbs are slightly flat, and the fingers and toes are fully webbed. Except for the fifth hind limb, all fingers and toes have claws at the end.

Turtles generally live in rivers, lakes, swamps, reservoirs and mountain streams, and sometimes go ashore. In their natural environment, turtles feed on worms, snails, shrimps and small fish, and also eat the stems and leaves of plants. Turtles are cold-blooded animals and will not eat anything when the temperature is 150°C.

When the temperature is above 10 degrees Celsius, the turtles are active and eat a lot. When the temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius, they enter hibernation. From April to October every year, the turtles are active. During this period, they start swimming in the water to look for food at sunset every day, and they stop looking for food before dawn. They dive into the water and often climb ashore from 10 am to 4 pm on sunny days to bask in the sun on the shore. June to August is the peak feeding period for turtles. In October, their food intake gradually decreases, and they hibernate from November to March.

In addition, turtles have the following characteristics: low reproduction rate and slow growth. A 500-gram turtle only gains about 100 grams after one year of breeding. However, turtles have strong hunger tolerance and are not easily starved to death even if they fast for several months. They also have strong disease resistance and a high survival rate. Therefore, turtles are relatively easy to raise artificially.

The plastron of a turtle is called tortoise shell, which is a valuable medicinal material. It has the effects of nourishing the heart and kidney, nourishing yin and reducing fire, nourishing blood and strengthening the body. It is also a hemostatic agent and can be used to treat vomiting blood, hematuria and uterine bleeding. In addition, turtle meat contains extremely rich protein and multiple vitamins, and is a delicious delicacy and tonic. In recent years, the number of wild turtle resources has become less and less due to indiscriminate hunting, while the demand for turtles in the domestic and foreign markets has increased. Therefore, artificial breeding of turtles can make people rich on the one hand, and protect the wild turtle species on the other hand.

Tortoises and turtles look similar, both have four legs and a head, and both have an operculum. The main difference between them is that the operculum of a turtle is very hard, so a person can stand on it, while the operculum of a turtle has bones, but is relatively soft, so a person cannot stand on it. Best wishes!
