Seaweeds in the genus Porphyra exhibit two modes of reproduction: sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction is common to most species of Porphyra, while asexual reproduction is only possessed by some species. When the thallus of Porphyra grows to the reproductive period, the nutrient cells at the front or edge of the algae begin to transform into fruit cells and spermatophores. The fruit cell is a female reproductive organ. After maturity, it forms a primitive fertilization thread structure, which has the function of assisting fertilization and gradually shrinks after fertilization. After the spermatophore leaves the mother body, it drifts with the water and begins to fertilize when it touches the fruit cell. The sperm nucleus enters the fruit cell and fuses with the nucleus of the fruit cell to complete fertilization, that is, to form a zygote. The zygote divides to form carpospores. In addition to sexual reproduction, some Porphyra species also reproduce asexually. Porphyra yezoensis, as the main cultivated species, is a representative species with these two modes of reproduction. The typical asexual reproduction process of laver is: the nutrient cells of the thallus undergo qualitative changes under certain conditions and are transformed into single spore sacs, that is, each such spore sac forms only one spore, which, after being released, attaches to the growth matrix of the Changji cover and then germinates and grows into small laver. |
