How should a novice raise pigeons?

Pigeons are one of the most common birds. They have good ornamental value and are rich in nutrition. They are a popular food among consumers. Many novice pigeon breeders encounter some problems in the process of pigeon breeding, which results in fewer and fewer pigeons or diseases, which eventually lead to breeding failure. It is certain that novices are inexperienced in pigeon breeding. I think there are 6 aspects that need to be taken seriously to be more conducive to the success of pigeon breeding.

1. When raising pigeons, you can either keep them in cages or surround them with iron mesh. Choose a cage with a gap big enough for the pigeon's head to stick out, and hang the food box outside to avoid taking up space.

I won’t discuss the large pigeon lofts that cost several thousand dollars here, you can find them on Xianyu.

2. The ground under your feet should be made of plastic mesh. I used straw.

3. Whether the pigeons are kept in cages or fenced off, pigeon droppings cannot fall directly to the ground, as they are difficult to clean. You can put a tray underneath and sprinkle soil or sand.

4. Selection of homing pigeons: When you first raise pigeons, do not look at their pedigree. Try to choose young and cheap ones, and raise at least two, preferably a pair.

If you want to buy adult pigeons, they may have to be locked up for a long time, and they will fly back home after being released. The most familiar ones are those that have just hatched and are hand-fed (you need to buy pigeon milk powder) and raised up. The second most familiar ones are 30-day-old young pigeons. Of course, if you buy young pigeons online, they may also get lost and caught after being released.

Many people will pay tuition fees when they first raise pigeons, but the first few pigeons will fly away, so don’t buy too expensive ones.

When the young pigeons have been caged for just one month, release the male alone. After the male comes back, release the female alone. Do not drive them away and wait for them to fly out on their own.

5. Feeding

If you don't have many pigeons, you can consider something more refined. The basic ones are: sorghum, wheat, mung beans, peas, millet, and corn.

Those who raise a lot of pigeons seem to only feed them corn and wheat (there are too many pigeons and they are going bankrupt).

However, I have observed that some pigeons do not like to eat millet, corn, peanuts, quinoa and peas.

Winter ingredients: sorghum, mung beans, maple beans, rapeseed, pea beans, shelled buckwheat, wheat, millet, quinoa, and melon seeds.

Summer ration: less sorghum, more mung beans, maple beans, rapeseed, shelled buckwheat, wheat, quinoa, millet, melon seeds, peas and soybeans.

In addition, pigeons need to eat some vegetables occasionally.

Pigeon health sand or cuttlefish bones are necessary to supplement calcium.

6. Disease

Pigeons are quite prone to illness. Common diseases include monocular cold (influenza, characterized by inability to open the eyes and tears), conjunctivitis (redness, sunken eyeballs), green stools caused by stress, Newcastle disease, Trichomonas, feather lice, respiratory diseases, vesicles, pigeon pox, etc.

So you may need to buy a lot of medicine (big guys have a lot of pigeons, and when they get sick, they just cook soup).

Here are some medicines I use: Chloramphenicol eye drops can be used for unilateral colds and conjunctivitis, and 0.9% saline and erythromycin ointment are useful in the early stages.

It is normal for pigeons that have just arrived home to have green feces and they need to be observed. If they are unhealthy, they need to be isolated immediately.

For respiratory diseases, use azithromycin and ciprofloxacin for three days (1/4 of a full tablet).

Pigeon pox should be cut off, then disinfected and applied with Yunnan Baiyao.

I don't know much about other diseases, but ribavirin, chlortetracycline, vitamins B and E, oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, and penicillin can be kept in the medicine cabinet at home.
