CATDOLL: Planting techniques for creepers

1. Planting technology of creeper

Parthenocissus is a perennial large deciduous woody vine, similar in shape to wild grapevines. The vine can be up to 18 meters (about 60 feet) long. It blooms in summer, with small flowers in clusters that are not noticeable, yellow-green or purple-black berries, opposite the leaves. The flowers are mostly bisexual, monoecious, and the cymes are often born on short branches between two leaves, 4 to 8 cm long, shorter than the petiole; the flowers are 5-part; the calyx is entire; the petals are reflexed at the top, and the ovary has 2 chambers, each with 2 ovules. The bark has lenticels and the pith is white. The branches are sturdy, the old branches are gray-brown, and the young branches are purple-red. There are tendrils on the branches, which are short and branched. The top and tip of the tendrils have sticky suckers, which can be attached to objects, whether they are rocks, walls or trees. The leaves are alternate, the leaflets are thick, the base is cuneate, and the variation is large. The edges have coarse serrations, and the leaves and veins are symmetrical. The leaves on the flower branches are broadly ovate, 8-18cm long, 6-16cm wide, often 3-lobed, or the leaves on the lower branches are split into 3 leaflets, with a heart-shaped base. The leaves are green, glabrous, with white powder on the back, and soft hairs on the veins on the back of the leaves, turning bright red in autumn. The leaves on young branches are smaller and often undivided. The berries are small spherical, blue-black when ripe, covered with white powder, and birds like to eat them. The flowering period is June, and the fruiting period is about September to October.

Parthenocissus tricuspidata has strong adaptability and prefers a humid environment, but is not afraid of strong light. It is cold-resistant, drought-resistant, and barren-resistant. It has a wide range of climate adaptability and can remain semi-evergreen or evergreen in winter in the south of the warm temperate zone. It is resistant to pruning, afraid of waterlogging, and has no strict requirements on soil. It can thrive in a humid environment or in a sunny place, but it grows best in a humid and fertile soil. It has a strong resistance to harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide. Parthenocissus tricuspidata is easy-going, occupies a small area, grows fast, and has a large green coverage area. A vine with a stem thickness of 2 cm can cover a wall with a green coverage area of 30 to 50 square meters after two years of planting.

Creepers can be planted on both the shady and sunny sides, and are mostly planted in sunny areas in cold regions. Creepers have strong resistance to chlorides and are suitable for cultivation in industrial and mining areas with severe air pollution. Seedlings can be managed extensively after one year of growth. They can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C in the northern winter and do not require cold protection. Transplantation or planting is carried out during the leaf-falling period. Before planting, organic fertilizer is applied as base fertilizer, and overly long stems and vines are cut off. Watering is sufficient for easy survival. One-year seedlings can reach a height of one meter. When planting at the base of a house, building wall or courtyard wall, a pit should be dug 50 cm away from the wall base, and the plant spacing should generally be 1.5 meters. It can be potted on the balcony of a building, with the seedling pot close to the wall, and the branches and vines quickly adhere to the wall.

Creepers can be propagated by sowing, cuttings and layering. Seeds are collected in October and can be sown in winter or in the spring of the following year. Transplantation or planting is carried out during the leaf-falling period. Creepers are usually propagated by cuttings, with a survival rate of 95%. Cuttings can be carried out from leaf fall to before budding. Facts have proved that seed propagation is also a good method, with an emergence rate of up to 80%, and it is also more convenient to manage the seedlings. Layering can be carried out in spring, and the branches of old plants are bent and buried in the soil to take root. In the spring of the second year, they are cut off from the mother plant and planted separately. Creepers have strong vitality, so they are very easy to survive. After the seedlings survive and grow for one year, they can be transplanted and planted. When planting, deep plow the soil and apply enough decomposed base fertilizer. When the seedlings grow to 1 meter long, they should be pulled to the climbing objects with wire and rope.

The author of "Mahogany" uses the growth of saplings to illustrate the growth of people. He writes about a method of raising saplings in which a tree planter lets "trees learn to find water in the soil by themselves", which illustrates the importance of enduring the test of life in a difficult environment and overcoming dependence for human growth.

3. How to grow fig tree seedlings

Figs are easy to grow. You can use ordinary garden soil. After they grow into thick seedlings, put about 10 grains of compound fertilizer around the roots.

4. Kohlrabi planting technology

Kohlrabi planting technology 1. Variety selection: mainly ordinary and giant Malone varieties. Ordinary kohlrabi has a slightly smaller root ball, tender flesh, less fiber, fragrant and crisp, and good quality. Malone has small and dark green leaves, a very large root ball, and a yield of more than 5,000 kg/mu.

2. Suitable sowing period: In this area, sowing is between late July and late August, either by direct sowing or transplanting.

3. Reasonable density planting: For direct seeding, about 25,000 plants are left per mu for ordinary planting; the transplanting density is 25cm×15cm, and about 20,000 plants are planted per mu; the transplanting density of Malone planting is 45cm×50cm, and about 3,000 plants are planted per mu.

4. Fertilizer and water management: After the kohlrabi is transplanted and planted, it is necessary to apply fertilizer immediately. During the growth and development of kohlrabi, thin high-quality organic fertilizer and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium complete fertilizer should be frequently applied. Generally, it is applied once every 15-20 days, and applied 3 to 5 times in a row. Each time, 5-10 kg of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer is used per mu, and thin human feces and urine are applied with water. During the rapid expansion period of underground roots, 3 to 5 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate is applied per mu, and 800 times of vegetable-specific Gaomeishi organic humic acid active liquid fertilizer or 500 times of plant vitality, 5000 times of Huangjia natural brassinolide mixed liquid, etc. are sprayed once every 7 to 10 days for 3 to 5 times in a row; and sufficient water supply should be ensured to avoid too much or too little, and the soil should not crack.

5. Disease and pest control: During the seedling stage, pay attention to the prevention and control of aphids and viral diseases. You can spray 1-2 times of 2500 times of Aphidicide and 800 times of Virus A on the leaves for prevention and control. During the expansion stage, pay attention to the prevention and control of yellow mites and root rot. You can spray 1500 times of Nongdi Le and 2500 times of Mexamethylenetetramine on the leaves for prevention and control.

Kohlrabi is mainly sold as pickled products, and to expand production it is necessary to cooperate with processing companies in order to create higher benefits.

5. How to grow bougainvillea seedlings

Bougainvillea requires certain nutrients, and proper fertilization is required during the growth period to meet its growth needs. Fertilizers should be well-rotted, and should be applied in small amounts and multiple times with a light concentration, otherwise, it is easy to damage the root system and affect growth. Starting from May, apply 10% to 15% cake fertilizer liquid once every half month to promote the growth of spring shoots; in the high temperature season from July to August, in order to meet its growth needs, apply 10% cake fertilizer liquid and a small amount of superphosphate or a small amount of compound fertilizer liquid once every 15 to 20 days; after September, less nitrogen fertilizer should be applied, and burnt mud ash and a small amount of superphosphate can be used to promote the bright red and beautiful bracts of Bougainvillea. Bougainvillea requires less water than other flowers, and as long as the potting soil is neither dry nor wet during the growth period, it will be fine.

6. Can squid and cuttlefish be farmed artificially?

Squid and cuttlefish can be farmed.

1. Artificially cultivated cuttlefish

Squid (commonly known as cuttlefish) is expensive in the market. Its meat is thick and delicious, and it has high nutritional and economic value. However, due to overfishing in recent years, natural resources have declined significantly.

The technology of artificially breeding cuttlefish is an international problem. It was not until 2004 that artificial breeding of cuttlefish was first successfully achieved in Ningbo, China. The breeding technology and scale still need to be improved.

2. Artificially farmed squid

Some artificially farmed squids can grow very large, with tender and delicious meat. Squid is a well-known and valuable seafood. The characteristics of changing the sex of squids are artificially controlled. From hatching to 10 months old, male squids can weigh up to 700 grams, while females only weigh 300 to 400 grams. Therefore, experts are exploring how to change most squids into males to significantly increase squid production.

The provincial aquatic seed project "Reproductive Regulation and Seedling Breeding Technology Development of Tiger-spotted Jingzu Squid" and the provincial public welfare technology research agricultural project "Research on Reproductive Regulation and Seedling Breeding Technology of Pseudo-order Squid" have passed the acceptance of the expert group organized by Zhoushan Ocean and Fisheries Bureau and Zhejiang Ocean University.

After two years of research, the team successfully used wild squid parents to hatch artificially bred false squid and tiger squid larvae, with a hatching rate of over 90% and a seedling survival rate of over 60%. Both species have the characteristics of fast growth, low leftover food, high survival rate, short breeding cycle, and suitability for large-scale breeding.

During the research period, the project team cultivated more than 64,000 fertilized eggs of tiger-spotted squid and Pseudo-eye squid, more than 57,000 tiger-spotted squid and Pseudo-eye squid larvae with a body length of 1 cm, and more than 33,000 tiger-spotted squid and Pseudo-eye squid seedlings with a body length of more than 3 cm.

In addition to the research base, breeding is also being promoted in Ningde, Fujian and other places. The growth rate of the two types of squid is extremely fast, and they can grow to more than 500 grams in 4 to 5 months. They can grow even faster in waters with high temperatures, which greatly shortens the time to market.
