CATDOLL: How is the sow's breeding date calculated?

The sow's breeding date is very important for the production management of the pig farm. Correctly calculating the breeding date can ensure the maximum production efficiency of the sow, thereby improving the profitability of the pig farming industry.

1. The estrus cycle of sows

Sows generally have a 21-day estrus cycle. During estrus, sows will experience mental anxiety, decreased appetite, vaginal congestion, etc. At the same time, changes in vaginal mucus can also be used as a basis for judging whether the sow is in estrus.

2. Methods for observing estrus in sows

There are several ways to observe whether a sow is in estrus:

  • Regular observation: Observe the sow’s behavioral changes twice a day, including appetite, activity level, etc.
  • Gilt jumping platform observation method: Place mature boar urine on the gilt jumping platform and observe whether the sow shows estrus behavior.
  • Artificial stimulation method: Use fingers or whistles to stimulate the sow's vagina and observe the sow's reaction.

3. Calculate the breeding date

After confirming that the sow is in estrus, the ideal breeding date can be calculated. Here is how:

  • Estrus day + 2 days: The purpose of this calculation is to ensure that the semen survives in the uterus long enough.
  • In addition, the performance and health status of the boar should be considered, and the best breeding date should be determined based on experience.

4. Notes

When calculating the breeding date, you need to keep the following points in mind:

  • Make sure sows and boars are in good health to avoid spreading disease.
  • Select high-quality breeding pigs to improve breeding efficiency.
  • Arrange the breeding date and the sow's farrowing date reasonably to facilitate subsequent production management.

By correctly calculating the sow's breeding date, the pig farm can achieve more effective reproductive management, improve the production level of the pig herd, and thus obtain greater economic benefits.
