CATDOLL: How to breed grasshoppers?

Grasshopper, also known as locust.

Its biological characteristics and value: Grasshoppers are both medicinal and edible insects, oviparous, belonging to the order Orthoptera, family Acrididae, class Insecta. According to statistics, there are 859 species of grasshoppers in the family Acrididae, and there are two main species that can be used as medicine and food, namely the East Asian migratory locust and the Chinese rice locust. These two grasshoppers are rich in nutrition, with soft, tender meat and delicious like shrimp. According to books such as "Research on Migratory Locusts" and "Feed Value of Migratory Locusts", grasshoppers are rich in active substances such as protein, carbohydrates, insect hormones, and contain vitamins A, B, C and trace elements such as phosphorus, calcium, iron, zinc, and manganese. Grasshoppers are not only delicious food, but also a good medicine for treating diseases, with the effects of warming the stomach and ribs, strengthening the spleen and digestion, and dispelling wind and relieving cough. "Compendium of Materia Medica" records that grasshoppers can be used alone or in combination to treat a variety of diseases, such as tetanus, infantile convulsions, fever, asthma, sha swell, cormorant plague, frostbite, tracheitis, and prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. You can boil ten of them into a decoction, or fry them and grind them into powder and drink, five per time. For frostbite, fry them and grind them into powder and mix with sesame oil and apply to the affected area.

1. Preliminary preparation for raising locusts: A breeding shed is required for raising locusts. It is advisable to choose a ventilated and sunny place, such as the front and back of the house, an idle courtyard, or a plot of land. The ground of the breeding shed should be 10 cm to 15 cm higher than the surrounding ground to facilitate drainage in the rainy season. The shed can be built with bamboo strips, bamboo poles, wooden sticks, etc. as supports, and then a shed cover like a greenhouse can be made with gauze. The bottom edge is buried in the ground, leaving a doorway, and a zipper is installed on the doorway or glued with adhesive strips. The height of the shed is 1.5 meters to 2 meters, and it must be built by the end of April. The area of the shed depends on the number of locusts. Generally, 600 to 800 adults can be raised per square meter. At the beginning, 15 square meters are enough to raise 10,000 locusts. Each female locust can lay 60 to 90 eggs. As the number of locusts increases, the shed will continue to be expanded. After the breeding shed is built, dense wheat is planted on the ground inside the shed to prepare for the young locusts to eat.

2. Locust management: First prepare non-toxic soil. Mix new sawdust and soil in a ratio of 2:1. The water content is 20% to 30%. Spread 3 cm to 5 cm thick soil on the container or wooden board, and cover the eggs with about 1 cm thick soil. After 10 to 15 days of incubation, all locusts will hatch around May Day. After hatching, the young locusts shed their skin once every 7 days. Each shed is one age. After 5 sheds, they become adults. After another 50 days, the adults can be sold (500 to 700 locusts per kilogram) or kept for seed and egg laying. During the 1st to 3rd age, the larvae eat very little. After 35 days of becoming adults, the food intake doubles. In addition to collecting some wild weeds for feeding, they can also cut artificially planted Mexican jade grass to feed scattered locusts.

3. Precautions for breeding locusts:

1. Locusts feed between 9 am and 5 pm, 2 to 3 times a day. When feeding locusts, spread the fodder evenly in the shed. 2. In rainy weather, the breeding shed should be covered, because if the ground is too wet, the locusts will not feed and will die. 3. The breeding density is generally 600 to 800 per square meter. If the breeding is too dense, the strong will eat the weak, the big will eat the small, or the molting will be eaten. 4. When the temperature in summer is above 35℃, the breeding shed should be shaded, and some water should be sprinkled on the gauze or in the shed to supply water. If the shed is too dry, it will also cause the death of locusts. 5. If locusts eat poisonous fodder, they will die immediately. So if you don't know whether the fodder is poisonous, it is best to wash it before feeding. 6 The life cycle of locusts is 75 days. Female locusts will die normally after laying eggs, and male locusts will die normally after mating.

4. Related knowledge: Locusts are divided into "summer locusts" and "autumn locusts" in a year. They are born in early May and grow into adults around early July, and lay eggs in the shed, completing the first generation; from July 15th to 25th, the second generation of locusts, the "autumn locusts", will naturally emerge from the ground, lay eggs underground in early September, and then die and the eggs can naturally overwinter. On May 1st of the following year, the young locusts will naturally hatch and break out of the ground as the temperature warms up.

Locusts, commonly known as "grasshoppers", are herbivorous insects with chewing mouthparts. They have short whip-like antennae and strong hind legs that can use bouncing to avoid predators. They are green and brown in color, which is a protective color for their living environment. Locusts have large mouths and well-developed jaws and feed on plant leaves. Locusts like to eat reeds, barnyard grass, white grass, dogtooth grass, wormwood, shrimp grass and sea salicornia. There are more than 12,000 species in the world. They are distributed in tropical and temperate grasslands and desert areas around the world.

1. Selection and identification of locust breeding sources

Methods for identifying locust species include:

⑴Consult locust classification experts.

⑵ Consult the locust retrieval table or atlas.

⑶Consult experienced locust farmers.

⑷Send the locust species to the customer for identification and examination.

Common types of farmed locusts include: East Asian migratory locust, cotton locust, Chinese rice locust, Chinese grasshopper, etc. These varieties have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as their growth cycle, generation, taste, food, size, and the variety required by the customer, and select the breeding variety in combination with the local climate, food source, etc.

2. Construction of locust breeding shed

The area of the shed depends on the number of locusts, and generally about 300 adults can be raised per square meter. To breed migratory locusts under natural conditions, the construction of the shed must be completed before the end of April, because the eggs of northern locusts can usually hatch in May.

3. Nymph stage management

⑴ Locust nymphs eat very little and prefer to feed on fresh and tender plants. At this stage, locusts are very fragile, so you should pay attention to rain protection to prevent them from drowning.

⑵The temperature should be controlled at 25-30℃, the light should be more than 12 hours, and the humidity should be maintained at around 15%. Under these conditions, locusts are most active, like to eat, and are conducive to growth.

⑶ The food intake of locust larvae above the third instar gradually increases. At this time, it is necessary to ensure that there is sufficient food in the shed, otherwise it will affect their normal growth and may even cause cannibalism.

⑷ Keep the shed clean and clean it once every 1-2 days to prevent the occurrence of diseases.

4. Locusts are disastrous insects. They are different from other special breeding industries. On the one hand, breeding locusts can turn harm into treasure and increase farmers' income. On the other hand, it increases the number of locusts, forming a potential hazard. Necessary safety management measures must be taken for its breeding to achieve twice the result with half the effort. For large-scale breeding, according to the standard of breeding on one mu of land, a half-meter wide plant contaminated isolation zone should be built around the breeding site, and wire mesh should be used as a fence around it, and equipped with pesticide sprayers. There are many kinds of pesticides to kill locusts. You can use 75% malathion emulsifiable concentrate or 2.5% diazinon and other pyrethroid insecticides to kill them.

If farmers do not want to breed locusts anymore, they must take the final extermination measures. If farmers do not want to breed locusts anymore, they should make preparations in advance. They cannot remove the breeding shed before May 20th of each spring. After all the locusts emerge from the ground and before they become adults, they should be killed with pesticides. This way, there will be no harm. If farmers decide not to breed locusts before the end of autumn, they must sell all of them before September 10th, that is, before the locusts mate, or kill them with pesticides. They must not be allowed to lay eggs in the breeding shed. Only by taking such measures can the potential harm of large-scale annexation in the future be eradicated, which is conducive to the healthy development of the breeding locust industry.
