CATDOLL: Characteristics of Nanyang Silk

1. Characteristics of Nanyang Silk

A traditional specialty of Zhongzhou. It is known for its bright color, softness and lightness. It has excellent texture, rigorous and dense, beautiful patterns, and is as brilliant as brocade. It has been famous since ancient times and has long been a major export of Henan Province. According to the "Yuanhe County Records", Nanyang already had "silk" and "silk cloth white chrysanthemum tribute" during the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Nanyang Prefecture set up a "dyeing and weaving bureau" in Wan County, and the prefecture collected more than 28,000 taels of silver from the silk industry every year. During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, Yin Ruobi was the magistrate of Nanyang County. He tried his best to persuade various machine workers to improve the products. In a few years, the old view was changed. At that time, Nanyang silk was called Yin silk. "Although its color and quality are inferior to those of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, it is better than Bian silk." In the 28th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty, Pan Shoulian, the magistrate of Nanyang County, sent people to Shandong, Huzhou, Suzhou and Hangzhou to introduce fine varieties, recruit silkworm masters and silk cloth to Nanyang, and teach new techniques of silkworm rearing, reeling, weaving, and printing and dyeing, and cultivate tussah silkworms, tussah silkworms, lake silkworms, and Chinese toon silkworms. It became common to raise mountain silkworms near the mountains and domestic silkworms near the city. At that time, there were silk weaving workshops everywhere in the main streets of Nanyang City and the suburban rural areas. "The craftsmanship is exquisite, almost competing with Suzhou and Hangzhou, and the annual sales price is about hundreds of thousands of gold." ("Henan Wanbao" Bingwu 31st issue) From 1902 to 1903, the "Henan Palace Newspaper" of the Qing Provincial Government successively published books such as "Questions and Answers on Planting Mulberry", "Requirements for Silkworm Rearing", "Simple Methods for Raising Chinese Toon Silkworms", and "Symptoms of Silkworm Diseases" from Nanyang County. In September 1905, the Qing Provincial Government sent Nanyang County's lake crepe, twisted satin, and flowered cotton silk to the capital for display. The heyday of Nanyang silk was from 1902 to 1920. At that time, there were more than 700 handicraft silk workshops in and outside Wancheng, more than 3,000 looms, and more than 30 silk shops. The largest one, Jiucheng, had more than 20 looms and more than 100 craftsmen. It also had branches in Shanghai, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Beijing and other places. Nanyang City alone could weave more than 1,000 pieces of silk crepe every day, worth more than 17,000 yuan in silver; about 4 million pieces were loaned out every year, worth more than 6 million yuan in silver. In 1919, Zhenping had 2,500 looms of various sizes, and its exports were slightly inferior to Nanyang. Shifo Temple was a silk trade distribution center, with extremely prosperous business, known as "Little Shanghai". In 1911, Shanghai Dafeng Silk Shop set up a shop in Shifo Temple to compete with Jiucheng. Nanzhao County also produces mountain silkworms, and the silk production is quite prosperous. Most residents weave cocoon silk and sell it to various places. The patterns of silk in Nanyang include dragon and tiger, bamboo and plum, pine and crane, and scattered flowers. Later, it developed into whatever patterns were needed. There are many patterns and exquisite craftsmanship, which is likely to compete with Suzhou and Hangzhou. Unfortunately, the once world-renowned Nanyang silk gradually declined after 1921. Long-term social unrest and political corruption have led to a sharp decline in silk production, a growing shortage of raw materials, a declining reputation for products, and silk shops and machine operators have closed down one after another. On the eve of liberation, Nanyang silk was on the verge of extinction and was in a dying state. After liberation, the people's government actively developed sericulture and vigorously supported the silk industry. In February 1949, the production of seven traditional products such as tussah silk, eight silk, and flower silk kudzu was resumed. Later, the green flower crepe, flower soft satin, soft satin quilt cover, and decorative satin with distinctive local characteristics were gradually added. In 1968, Nanyang silk resumed export, and its products were sold well in more than 20 countries and regions in Europe and the United States. After 1979, eight kinds of silk products from Nanyang, including mulberry-cotton silk and double crepe, were rated as "excellent products" by the province.
