CATDOLL: How to keep octopus?

1. How to raise octopus?

Octopidae is the largest family in the cephalopod class, commonly known as octopus. The eyes on both sides of the head of the octopus are small in diameter, and there are 4 pairs of arms in front of the head and around the mouth, with similar or different lengths. It is widely distributed in various seas around the world, with about 140 species. Most of them are shallow-sea species, and there are also a few deep-sea species. Most of the arms of the Octopidae have two rows of suckers, and some species only have a single row of suckers. The third arm on the right or left side is stalked. The top of the arm is deformed, called the "terminal", and there is no tentacle. The umbilicus is oval, small, and has no fleshy fins. The inner shell is degenerate, with only two small shell needles remaining on both sides of the back, and no light organ. The female has a pair of oviducts. It mainly lives on the bottom and crawls on the seabed. It can also swim briefly in the bottom seawater by the reaction of the funnel spray. It has a short-distance reproduction and wintering migration habit, and feeds on lobsters, shrimps, clams, crabs, shellfish and bottom-dwelling fish. They are often preyed on by giant octopuses and sea eels. The number of eggs laid by different octopus species varies greatly, ranging from a few thousand to more than 100,000. The eggs mature and are laid in batches. The eggs are shaped like rice grains and are often linked together in clusters. The true octopus on the southern coast of China and the short octopus on the northern coast both have a certain yield. In addition to being edible, octopus also has the effects of nourishing blood and qi, astringing and promoting muscle growth in medicine.

1. Biological characteristics and artificial breeding

Octopus is a temperate mollusk, and its adapted water temperature cannot be lower than 7℃. The most suitable seawater specific gravity is 1.021. It will die in a low salinity environment. The best bottom of the sea area is gravel. When the water temperature is above 12℃, it can lay eggs all year round. After hatching, the fry is about 3mm in length. It can feed on large animal plankton and grow. After 45, when the total length is 10-13mm, it sinks to the seabed and lives in the bottom.

Octopus can be cultured in cages with mesh smaller than the fish. A net cover is needed to prevent the octopus from escaping. Octopus are mostly cultured in harbors with calm waves. The suitable water temperature is 15℃-23℃. Generally, they are cultured in spring, summer (June and July) and autumn (October-December).

Seedlings: Octopus fry caught in cages are the most suitable, but those caught from bottom drag nets can also be used. The amount of fry to be released varies depending on the water temperature and water flow. Use large cages to release 36-42kg of fry per 1m3, and small cages to release 25-30kg of fry per 1m3. To prevent the fry from killing each other, they should be released from the same batch, and the fry should be released into the cage after they have eaten their fill.

Feed: Cheap small fish and shellfish can be put in, frozen small fish can also be put in, but they must be fresh. If there are too many leftover baits, you can reduce or stop feeding for 1-2 days. Leftover baits will cause water pollution. If you stop feeding for more than 3 days, it will cause cannibalism. The feeding behavior is irregular when the water temperature is around 13℃, and the octopus will not eat when the water temperature is below 7℃.

Survival rate: The survival rate of caged seedlings is 70%-80% after 2 months of cultivation, and the survival rate of fished seedlings is about 50%. The seedlings are raised in cages, and the mortality rate reaches 20%-30% on the 15th day, and then gradually decreases. After 15 days of cultivation, the octopuses are divided into three sizes: large, medium and small, and raised in different cages. Clean the cages every 15 days in spring and autumn, and every 30 days in winter.

2. How to cool down and keep octopus alive

After the octopus is harvested, a method that is convenient for transportation and can cool down the octopus to keep it alive can be used. The first step is to select the healthy individuals of the captured live octopus and remove the damaged and substandard octopus. Put the selected octopus in clean seawater for 0.5-1 hour, and rely on the octopus's own physiological activities to remove the mud, mucus and dirt in the sucker. If it is not clean yet, do not use your hands or any tools to remove the debris on the fish body. The dirty water should be drained and replaced with clean seawater for purification again. When adding water, do not directly flush the octopus. Try not to touch the octopus with your hands or other tools during the whole process. Octopuses caught from the ocean can survive for a period of time after being soaked in fresh water, but octopuses that have been soaked in fresh water are difficult to survive after cooling and dormancy.

The second step is to put ice in a sanitary plastic bag and put it into the seawater to lower the temperature of the seawater to near 0℃, when the octopus is in a dormant state. Then put the dormant octopus into a plastic bag, add 20% clean seawater with a temperature close to 0℃, fill it with oxygen, seal it, and make sure the volume occupied by oxygen is the same as the volume occupied by seawater and octopus.

The third step is to add 2cm thick flake ice in a sealed plastic bag to the bottom and sides of the incubator, put the packaged octopus in it, put more flake ice on top, cover the incubator with a lid, and seal it with tape.

The best cooling method is 0℃. Temperatures below 0℃ will affect the survival rate of octopuses and even freeze them to death. The process from freezing to selling should be completed within 3-5 days.

Use a very thin bottle

2. Can octopuses be kept as pets?

Use sea water

Aquariums with a depth of more than 40CM

Just feed it clams

But octopuses are relatively shy and quiet creatures.

It is best not to disturb its life too much during the breeding process.

Otherwise it will affect the growth of the octopus

There are many kinds of octopus, and the species often vary depending on where they come from, so I don't know which one you are talking about.

However, in general, the types of octopus sold in seafood markets do not grow too large.

It is difficult to raise octopuses. They will die if you don't pay attention to them. Here is a repost:

1. You need sea water and use sea water essence.

2. You have to use an oxygen pump and keep adding oxygen, otherwise it will go crazy (spray ink everywhere).

3. You need a place similar to a hole. The octopus likes to hide there. If you don’t make a hole for it, it will go crazy.

4. The container must be high, otherwise the octopus will crawl out. One time, my octopus crawled out of the fish tank and lay on my computer to sleep. Oh, by the way, he can stay out of water for a long time, so be careful of these points.

5. By the way, octopuses like to eat shrimps, crabs and shells, and it’s best to eat them alive.

3. Can octopuses live on land? How long can they survive out of water?

Octopuses live in the ocean. They have adapted to the ocean's water environment, so they cannot live on land. Although they can stay on land for a while, this time cannot be too long. If they stay on land for a long time, they may become dehydrated, and in severe cases, they may die. Not only can they not live on land, but because they have adapted to the seawater environment with a relatively high salinity, they may not be able to survive in fresh water. 1. Can octopuses live on land? Octopuses are creatures that live in the ocean. They have adapted to the marine environment, are suitable for living at the bottom of the ocean, and have adapted to the environment with a relatively high salinity. Therefore, they generally cannot live on land for a long time. Although octopuses can stay on land for a while, this time cannot be too long, otherwise it may cause the octopus to become dehydrated, and in severe cases, it may even cause their death. Moreover, if octopuses are suddenly allowed to live in a freshwater environment in an environment where they have adapted to a relatively high salinity, they may also not be able to adapt.

After research, scientists found that octopuses may come to the shore for various reasons, or stay on the shore for a while, but they will clearly know the direction of the ocean and return to the ocean after a period of time. The fact that they will not get the direction of the ocean wrong is very interesting to the researchers, so they conducted some follow-up experiments on it.

2. How long can an octopus survive out of water? As mentioned above, an octopus can stay out of water on the shore for a period of time, but not too long. Because octopuses need oxygen dissolved in water to survive, once they leave the water for a long time, they may die of dehydration. However, there is a structure in the octopus's body called the mantle cavity, which can store some water in it. This water can ensure that the octopus survives out of water for a period of time. Specifically, this time is not certain. Some octopuses can persist for a longer time, even for several days. However, large octopuses may persist for a shorter time.
