CATDOLL: How to prevent and treat turtle tail amputation?

1. How to prevent and control turtle tail breakage?

Northern Diamondback Turtle (Details)

Tail breaking is a unique self-protection mechanism of some animals. For example, geckos will use tail breaking to escape from predators. Of course, this is a special phenomenon. Turtles do not have this characteristic. So when you see a turtle breaking its tail, you must pay attention, because improper handling may lead to the death of the turtle.

1. Symptoms

The turtle's tail peels, erodes, ulcerates, and breaks, exposing muscles and bones until part or all of the tail is broken off.

2. Causes

1. The water quality is poor, and the corrosive bacteria that breed in the water will corrode the turtle's tail, causing it to peel, erode, and ulcerate. If the erosion lasts for a long time, the tail will become broken.

2. Turtles crawl and scratch each other or fight for food, scratching their tails with a fishy smell (remove them promptly and keep them separately), or accidentally bite or break their tails.

3. Prevention and treatment

1. Optimize water quality. Disinfect and sterilize the water for raising turtles regularly and replace it regularly to prevent the growth of corrosive bacteria.

2. Treat wounds and prevent corrosion. For peeling, erosion, ulceration, and broken parts of the turtle's tail, apply Yunnan Baiyao or gentian violet 2-3 times a day for 7 days as a course of treatment. Generally, 2-3 courses of treatment can basically heal the wound.

This poor little grass turtle, which had its tail cut off last time due to a bite, has now recovered almost completely after half a month of treatment. This issue will share with you how to deal with and treat a tortoise's tail cut off! Don't let the tortoise get hurt even more!

If the tail is broken, it cannot be treated and will never recover.

2. What should I do if the little turtle’s tail is broken and it stops eating and is dying?

A turtle will not die even if it does not eat for a year. It may be too lonely. You can buy it another companion. Buy some live fish and shrimps to feed it and it will definitely eat them.

3. How to deal with the broken tail of a small alligator turtle? Can it be kept dry in winter? The temperature in my home is only about 17 or 8 degrees

Cut off the tail and raise it slowly

Unless you have rotten skin, you can keep it dry. Try to keep it dry as little as possible. Small crocodiles are water turtles.

The temperature is a bit low

The tail will not grow back if it is broken. The most suitable growth temperature is 20-33 degrees. It grows fastest when the temperature is 28-31 degrees. It can move a little when the temperature is 15-17 degrees. It hibernates when the temperature is below 15 degrees and deeply hibernates when the temperature is below 10 degrees.

If your turtle is a newly bought baby turtle that is about 5 cm in size, I suggest you buy a heater to control the water temperature between 20 and 30 degrees and feed it normally. This way, the baby turtle will not die easily during the winter. If it is larger than this, that is, a turtle of 10 cm, you can put it in the turtle tank with water that does not exceed its carapace. Change the water once a month and do not disturb it for no reason. It will definitely survive the winter safely.

Alligator snapping turtles are pure water turtles and cannot be kept dry. It is not recommended for novices to hibernate in the first year of raising turtles, as they are prone to death. There are many reasons for tail breakage. Water quality is very important. Tap water must be exposed to the sun before use.

Throw some oxytetracycline in there and don't worry too much
