Flame tortoises are quite ornamental when kept in glass boxes, and currently a small number of families in China keep flame tortoises as pets.

Flame turtles are omnivorous, and their main food is snails, insects, crayfish, tadpoles, small fish, carrion, algae and aquatic plants. Young turtles are carnivorous, and as they grow older, they tend to be more plant-based. In artificial breeding, they can eat lean pork, animal offal, small fish and shrimp, earthworms, watermelons, vegetable leaves, bananas, etc. Flame turtles are very active, but they do not fight with each other. They will not freeze to death below zero degrees, and they are also very active at 42 degrees Celsius. As long as they are fed well, they can gain 30 to 40 grams per month. June to July each year is the breeding season for flame turtles, and each time they lay 1 to 10 eggs. The long diameter of the egg is 27.1 to 30.7 mm, and the short diameter is 13.9 to 161 mm. The egg weighs 3.55 to 5 grams. The incubation period is 72 to 80 days. Flame turtles are very adaptable. As long as they are fed and managed, their survival rate is still relatively high.
