CATDOLL: Cicada turtle breeding technology

1. Cicada turtle breeding technology

To breed cicada turtles, you need to choose an open, sunny and ventilated site, and plant fruit trees in the site to provide sufficient food sources for the cicada turtles. Then insert the collected branches with insect eggs into the sand, wait for the eggs to hatch and fall into the sand, and then spread them at the roots of the fruit trees, allowing the cicada turtles to burrow into the soil.

How to breed cicada turtles 1. Breeding environment

Cicada turtles have high requirements for the environment. When breeding them, you should choose a relatively moist, sunny, ventilated, and flat site, and plant fruit trees such as plum trees, apple trees, pear trees, and jujube trees in the site to provide sufficient food sources for the cicada turtles and prevent them from escaping.

2. Egg hatching

Before raising cicada turtles, you need to obtain dead branches with insect eggs from trees, tie them together, insert them into moist sand, and then place the dead branches in a warm environment. After waiting for a week, the eggs will hatch and fall into the sand. At this time, you can evenly spread the sand at the roots of the fruit trees.

3. Stay hydrated

Cicada turtles are suitable for growing in a humid environment. During the breeding process, water should be sprayed on the soil surface regularly to prevent the soil from drying out and cracking, which would affect the growth of the larvae. In rainy weather, drainage ditches need to be dug around the breeding site to prevent water accumulation in the soil, which would lead to the death of the cicada turtles.

4. Notes

The site for breeding cicada turtles must be surrounded by protective nets to prevent animals such as sheep from entering and trampling on the soil, which would prevent the cicada turtles from successfully drilling out of the soil. In addition, poultry such as chickens and ducks cannot be raised in the breeding site, and harmful chemicals cannot be used, otherwise the mortality rate of cicada turtles will increase.

2. How much does it cost to raise cicadas?

It is not easy to breed cicada monkeys. Because the peak period of cicada monkeys coming out of the ground is around May 25-July 10 [in Hebei Province and some places in Shandong Province]. Only by purchasing them in time during this period and preventing them from molting can they be kept fresh for a relatively long time. In this way, the market demand for cicada monkeys can be met. Under normal circumstances, cicadas will shed their skin within a few hours after they are unearthed. Special treatment is required to prevent them from molting. A friend of mine said that he put the cicadas he purchased in a cold storage [he would go to the cold storage to pick them up when the customer called] and they had to be processed, but the specific treatment method was not mentioned.

According to my understanding, due to the scarcity of resources and the concentrated purchasing period, it is difficult to do a good job of purchasing, storage, transportation and preservation without understanding the production area and good interpersonal relationships.

Since it is a seller's market, the price is set by you. As long as the buyer agrees, it's OK.

3. Current status of development and utilization of fodder insects

The current development status is good, and many varieties have been developed, such as artificially breeding mealworms as food for pets such as birds and turtles.

For example, Shandong raises cicadas for human consumption, and artificially raises katydids and crickets, etc.

The development prospects of insects for feeding are very broad in the future

4. Where is the person who raises cicadas in Heze, Shandong from?
