CATDOLL: Are jellyfish poisonous? Can they kill you?

1. Are jellyfish poisonous? Can they kill you?

Jellyfish are coelenterates. They are beautiful, transparent, light and graceful. They float in tropical and subtropical oceans like parachutes. Their graceful appearance is amazing. The sky-blue sail jellyfish has a transparent sail on its back. With the help of the sea breeze and waves, it bumps in the sea like a small boat. The moon jellyfish has an umbrella-like bell-shaped body. It floats on the sea surface like a bright moon falling into the sea. It is very beautiful. The Portuguese man-of-war (with pointed ends, a raised middle and a flat bottom, shaped like a monk's hat. The overall color is blue-green, sometimes slightly red) has very long poisonous tentacles; the tentacles of the lion's mane jellyfish (Chrysaora melanaster) can be several meters long when stretched, which is used to catch food and defend against enemies. There is also the highly poisonous cubic jellyfish, also known as the sea wasp. The tentacles of jellyfish are covered with countless stinging cells (cnidoblasts). The nematocysts contain stinging cells that produce venom and slender and hollow stinging threads. The venom of the stinging cells is similar to that of cobras, from which a variety of large-molecule peptides and proteins can be isolated. In the ocean, if you see these jellyfish, do not touch them, otherwise you will be stung by their poisonous stinging cells, which can cause redness and swelling of the body and itching of the skin, while severe cases can cause severe pain, muscle spasms, shock, and even death.

2. Are jellyfish scary? . .

Although jellyfish look beautiful and gentle, they are actually very fierce. Under the umbrella, the slender tentacles are its digestive organs and weapons. The tentacles are covered with stinging cells, which can shoot venom like poisonous threads. After the prey is stung, it will be paralyzed and die quickly. The tentacles will grab the prey tightly, retract, and suck it with the polyps under the umbrella. Each polyp can secrete enzymes to quickly decompose the protein in the prey. Because jellyfish have no respiratory organs and circulatory systems, only primitive digestive organs, the captured food is immediately digested and absorbed in the coelenteron. In the hot summer, when we are swimming in the sea, sometimes we suddenly feel a tingling pain in the chest, back or limbs of the body, as if we were whipped by a whip. It must be the jellyfish that is stinging us. However, generally, if you are stung by a jellyfish, you will only feel burning pain and redness and swelling. Just apply nitrate or vinegar, and the swelling and pain will subside in a few days. However, in the seas between Malaysia and Australia, there are two species of jellyfish, namely sea wasp jellyfish and hand jellyfish, which secrete strong toxicity. If you are stung by them, you will have difficulty breathing and die within a few minutes. Therefore, they are also called killer jellyfish. Therefore, if you are stung by a jellyfish and have difficulty breathing, you should immediately perform artificial respiration or inject a cardiotonic drug. Don't be careless to avoid accidents.

3. What harm do jellyfish do to the human body?

The overproduction of jellyfish has brought great difficulties to the economy and tourism in the Mediterranean region. Some jellyfish have long tentacles, which can entangle fishing nets, blocking the flow of water and causing the nets to be washed away. The stinging cells on the jellyfish pose a great threat to fish, causing fish migration and reduced fish production. The Mediterranean coast has always been a world tourist destination, with 200 million tourists coming here for vacation every year. However, jellyfish can cause harm to the human body, ranging from burning pain to heart paralysis and life-threatening conditions. Therefore, many people return home disappointed, which is miserable!

4. The harm of jellyfish venom

The female tentacles are covered with stinging cells, which can shoot out venom like poisonous threads. After the prey is stung, it will quickly become paralyzed and die. The tentacles will grab the prey tightly, retract, and suck it with the polyps under the umbrella. Each polyp can secrete enzymes to quickly break down the protein in the prey. Generally, when you are stung by a jellyfish, you will only feel burning pain and redness and swelling. Just apply nitrate or vinegar, and the swelling and pain will go down in a few days. However, on the sea surface from Malaysia to Australia, there are two kinds of jellyfish called sea wasp jellyfish (box jellyfish) and hand jellyfish. The toxicity they secrete is very strong. If you are stung by them, you will have difficulty breathing and die within a few minutes. Therefore, they are also called killer jellyfish. Therefore, when you are stung by a jellyfish and have difficulty breathing, you should immediately implement artificial respiration or inject cardiotonic drugs. Don't be careless to avoid accidents.

5. A 4-year-old boy encountered a jellyfish in the sea water and had a small red rash on his thigh. Is it related to fever? What harm does jellyfish do to the human body?

Jellyfish dermatitis (also known as jellyfish dermatitis) is a disease that occurs with the arrival of summer. Jellyfish tentacles have a large number of cnidocytes, which contain venom, which is mainly composed of protein-like proteins, peptides and a variety of toxic enzymes, in addition to strong anesthetics, analgesics, histamine, etc. When the human body comes into contact with the tentacles of jellyfish, the cnidocytes can penetrate the skin and cause cnidocyte dermatitis, which can cause death in severe cases.

When a swimmer's exposed limbs are stung by a jellyfish, they feel tingling, burning or itching, followed by the appearance of cord-like erythema and papules at the sting site, and there may also be blisters, bullae, petechiae and ecchymoses. In mild cases, the rash may subside in 1-2 days, and in most patients, the rash will scab over and heal in 1-2 weeks. If stung in multiple places on the body or by large jellyfish and highly toxic jellyfish, chills, fever, abdominal pain, fatigue, cold sweats often occur within 1-4 hours. A few may experience chest tightness, foaming at the mouth, decreased blood pressure, difficulty breathing, pulmonary edema, and severe cases may lead to death.

Once stung by a jellyfish, do not rinse with fresh water, as fresh water can cause the stinging cells to release venom. Use a towel, clothes, or sand to wipe off the tentacles or venom adhering to the skin as soon as possible, or rinse with sea water. If conditions permit, rinse or spray the affected area with alcohol or alkaline lotion, such as 10% sodium bicarbonate. For those with large skin lesions and severe systemic reactions, go to the hospital for treatment in time.

6. Why do all the little jellyfish in our house sink to the bottom? Are they sick?

Lack of vitality, maybe insufficient oxygen, bad water quality, or starvation
