CATDOLL: Can crabs be transported on an airplane?

1. Can crabs be transported on airplanes?

Yes, it must be shipped in the cargo hold.

2. How can we transport live prawns and crabs 500 kilometers by car and keep them from dying?

If the survival rate is high, a few are round and the temperature is high in summer.

3. Packing method and weight of hairy crabs during transportation

1. As hairy crabs rely on their gills to breathe oxygen in the water, their bodies must be kept moist during transportation. Sprinkle the shipping tools with clean river water before shipment to keep the crabs in the net bag in a humid environment. Be careful to place them gently during shipment, and do not throw or squeeze them. Make a few holes around the foam box so that the crabs have enough oxygen to breathe. Generally, when the temperature is around 20℃, hairy crabs can survive for 1 week without dying or rarely die.

2. After the gills of the temporarily raised hairy crabs are cleared and the intestines are emptied, they can be shipped. First, use polyethylene mesh bags to separate males and females according to the size of the specifications, put the hairy crabs in neat rows with their abdomens facing downwards, put them in place, label them, and tie the bag tightly to prevent the hairy crabs from crawling inside the bag, then put them in foam boxes. When the temperature is high, put ice cubes in the foam box to cool down and keep them warm.

The packaging materials should be hygienic and clean.

3. Regardless of whether it is long-distance or short-distance transportation, after the commercial hairy crabs are transported to the sales area, the packaging bags must be opened and sold immediately. If they cannot be sold in time, the hairy crabs should be scattered in cement pools or large barrels. It is best to spray water to keep the crab bodies moist. Do not concentrate a large number of hairy crabs in water containers to prevent large numbers of hairy crabs from suffocating and dying due to high density and lack of oxygen in the water.

According to the Fish Food Hygiene Law, hairy crabs should be sold alive, and those that are dead should not be sold fresh or processed. Operators should abide by this regulation. Consumers should learn to identify the quality of hairy crabs and not buy dead, rotten, or low-quality hairy crabs.

4 points to note to improve the survival rate of hairy crab transportation

There are four key technical issues in the transportation of hairy crabs:

(1) Strict grading: Caught (or purchased) river crabs must be graded according to their quality and must be divided into four parts.

First, separate the big and small. Store river crabs of different sizes separately. If the big and small are mixed, the small crabs will die easily. Second, separate the strong and the weak. Crabs with hard shells and legs should be separated from those with less hard shells and legs. The former are often fat and strong, with strong vitality, suitable for long-distance transportation and high sales prices; the latter are the opposite, and it is best to be transported after temporary intensive cultivation. Third, separate the healthy and the disabled. Crabs with eight legs and two claws should be separated from those with incomplete appendages. Crabs with incomplete and damaged limbs are only suitable for local sales or short-distance transportation.

Fourth, fat and lean crabs are separated. Crabs with thick shells and strong meat are heavy, have strong vitality and are resistant to transportation. After grading, strong and fat river crabs can be exported or transported long distances, while crabs with lower grades can only be transported short distances or sold nearby.

(2) Do a good job of packaging. Currently commonly used packaging tools include bamboo cages, bamboo tubes, wicker baskets, wooden barrels, wire cages, as well as cattail bags and straw bags.

Crab baskets and crab cages are commonly used for packaging. You can first line the bamboo basket (cage) with soaked cattail bags, and then put the crabs into the basket layer by layer. When placing the crabs, the back of the crabs should be facing up and the abdomen should be facing down. Try to fill it flat and cover it tightly so that the crabs cannot crawl in the basket to reduce physical consumption and prevent injuries.

(3) Timely transportation: The packaged crab baskets should be transported as soon as possible.

Generally speaking, the crabs in the crab baskets rarely die within 3 to 5 days, but the death rate increases day by day after 5 days. Therefore, they are generally transported by motor vehicles and ships, and exported by air, so as to shorten the transportation time as much as possible and increase the survival rate of transportation.

(4) Strengthen management during transportation Before transportation, the crab baskets should be soaked in water, or water should be sprayed to keep a certain amount of moisture in the crab baskets and the crab's gill cavity, so as to ensure that the river crabs are always in a humid environment during transportation. When transporting crabs by car for long distances, the crab baskets should also be covered with wet cattail bags or straw bags. During transportation, the crabs should be protected from the sun, wind, rain, and especially high temperatures, so it is usually best to transport them at night.

Water spraying should be added regularly during transportation. Generally, after 1-2 days of transportation, the survival rate of commercial crabs can reach about 90%. If conditions permit, cooling transportation can be used to keep the transportation temperature at 5-10℃, and the transportation survival rate can be close to 100%. When loading and unloading crab baskets filled with crabs, be careful to handle them with care and never throw or squeeze them.
