Symptoms of heat stroke in laying hens

Hot weather is an important challenge for the health management of laying hens. When the temperature in the chicken house is too high, laying hens are prone to heat stroke. Laying hens with heat stroke will show the following symptoms:

  • Panting and shortness of breath
  • Fluffy feathers
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased body temperature
  • Dull expression

Rapid medical treatment measures

Once the laying hen is found to have heatstroke, the following treatment measures should be taken immediately:

  • Move the laying hens to a cool, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Provide laying hens with fresh drinking water to replenish water.
  • Use misters or waterers to cool the coop and lower the ambient temperature.
  • Spray an appropriate amount of cool water on the laying hens.
  • Add appropriate amounts of electrolytes or B vitamins to the feed to supplement the nutrients needed by laying hens.
  • If the laying hen's condition is serious or symptoms worsen, ask a veterinarian to examine and treat it promptly.

Ways to prevent heat stroke

To prevent heat stroke in laying hens, the following measures can be taken:

  • Make sure the chicken house is well ventilated and you can install ventilation equipment to keep the air circulating.
  • Adjust feeding method and time according to the temperature inside and outside the chicken house.
  • Provide laying hens with plenty of drinking water and change it regularly.
  • Avoid feeding and working during high temperature periods, and try to do it in the morning and evening when the temperature is lower.
  • Clean the chicken coop regularly and keep the environment dry and fresh.
  • Provide laying hens with suitable heat protection facilities, such as shade sheds or cooling mist systems.

Through the above treatment measures and prevention methods, the risk of heat stroke in laying hens can be reduced and the healthy production of laying hens can be guaranteed. I hope the above information will be helpful to laying hen breeders!
