What is blue ear disease?

Blue ear disease, also known as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), is an infectious disease of pigs caused by the blue ear virus. The virus mainly attacks the respiratory and reproductive systems of pigs, causing severe disease symptoms in pigs during their growth, which seriously affects the production efficiency of pigs.

Transmission of blue ear disease in pigs

The main ways of transmission of PRRS are:

  • Transmission through direct contact: Swine blue ear disease is a highly contagious disease. The virus can be transmitted through direct contact between pigs, such as smelling and touching.
  • Airborne transmission: The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus can be transmitted through droplets or aerosols in the air, especially when the virus concentration is high in the pig farm, it is easily transmitted through the air.
  • Transmission through biological vectors: The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus can be transmitted through various biological vectors such as mosquitoes, house mice, birds, etc.
  • Human transmission: People, vehicles, tools, etc. may also become carriers of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus.

Preventive measures for blue ear disease in pigs

In order to effectively prevent and control the spread of blue ear disease in pigs, the following preventive measures can be taken:

  • Keep the place clean and sanitary: Clean and disinfect the pig farm regularly to keep the environment inside and outside the pig house sanitary.
  • Strengthen immunity: Through vaccination, the immunity of pigs can be improved and the risk of disease can be reduced.
  • Isolate sick pigs: Pigs suspected of being infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome should be isolated promptly to prevent the spread of the virus.
  • Strictly control the entry and exit of personnel: restrict non-essential personnel from entering the pig farm, and personnel entering the pig farm must strictly implement hygiene measures such as hand washing and disinfection.
  • Pay attention to biosafety: ensure that the surrounding environment of the pig farm is harmless and block the spread of viruses through biological vectors.
  • Health monitoring: Regularly monitor the health of the pig herd and take timely measures if any abnormal situation is found.
