CATDOLL: Swine Herpes: Disease, Transmission and Prevention

Swine herpes is a common infectious disease in pigs that has a serious impact on the breeding industry. It is caused by the swine herpes virus and can lead to reduced production capacity and economic losses in pig herds.

Virus Overview

Swine herpesvirus belongs to the family Herpesviridae and is a double-stranded DNA virus. Two different strains of the virus have been isolated: classical strains and non-classical strains. Among them, the classical strain mainly causes acute viral diseases, while the diseases caused by non-classical strains are relatively mild.

Mode of transmission

Swine herpes is mainly transmitted through direct contact and droplet transmission. The virus exists in the blood, saliva, feces, urine and respiratory secretions of sick pigs. When healthy pigs come into direct contact with infected pigs or inhale droplets containing the virus, they are susceptible to infection. In addition, the virus may also be transmitted through sharing utensils, tools, drinking water and feed.

Symptoms

The incubation period of swine herpes is usually 3-5 days, after which the pigs will show obvious symptoms. Common symptoms include fever, skin herpes, erythema, itching, ulceration and peeling. Some pigs may also have symptoms such as conjunctivitis, skin necrosis and diarrhea. At the same time, herpes infection in sows may also lead to fetal death or the birth of weak piglets.

Prevention and Control

In order to prevent and control the spread of swine herpes, farms should take the following measures:

  • Strengthen biosafety management: strengthen pig house environment cleaning and sterilization, and maintain good sanitary conditions.
  • Introduction of healthy pig herds: Introduce healthy breeding pigs or piglets and conduct regular vaccinations and health tests.
  • Isolate infectious pigs: Pigs with herpes should be isolated and treated in time to prevent the virus from spreading to other pigs.
  • Strict management: strictly control the entry and exit of personnel and vehicles into the farm, and carry out disinfection work.
  • Vaccination: Farms can choose appropriate vaccines for vaccination according to specific circumstances to improve the immunity of pigs.

Through the above prevention and control measures, the risk of transmission of swine herpes can be effectively reduced and the stability and healthy development of the breeding industry can be maintained.
