Morphological characteristics of the golden-edged beetle

Male and female adults are similar in appearance and both have no wings. The male body is 21 mm to 25 mm long and 13 mm to 16 mm wide; the female body is 36 mm to 41 mm long and 17 mm to 21 mm wide. The male and female adults are flat and oval in shape. The back of the body is purple-brown to brown-brown and shiny. The male body color is lighter, but the luster is particularly strong. The two compound eyes are far apart. The posterior edge of the ventral plate is sunken, and there is no obvious incision in the center. There are dense thorns on the tibia of the foot. The holes on the front edge of the dorsal plate and the side edges are orange-yellow, so it is called the golden-edged turtle. The eggs are laid in the egg case, which is 20 mm long and slightly curved into a bean shape. There are two rows of pits on the protruding side, with a wavy curve in the middle; there are groove-shaped horizontal stripes on the surface. The body shape of the young nymph is similar to that of the adult, but the back is slightly raised and the color is lighter than that of the adult. When it comes to old nymphs, golden edges appear on the front edge and both sides of the dorsal plate, and it is difficult to distinguish it from the adult in appearance.
