CATDOLL: What do locusts eat?

1. Do locusts eat flies?

Locusts do not eat flies.

Locusts are herbivorous animals that like to eat various grass plants and do not eat carnivorous food, so locusts do not eat flies.

Locusts, commonly known as grasshoppers, are an agricultural pest that feeds on a wide range of plants, such as wheat, millet, rice, corn, various beans and vegetables, weeds, etc. They feed on the leaves, tender stems and flower buds of these plants. In mild cases, they will bite holes in them. When locusts occur in large numbers, they can wipe out crops and grasses, causing great harm.

Because they only eat plant-based food, locusts do not eat flies.

2. What do grasshoppers eat?

I have raised a few grasshoppers. They eat grass, crops, and drink dew. They are very harmful, but you can raise some at home and feed them grass. Grasshoppers have chewing mouthparts and are herbivorous insects. Their antennae are short whip-shaped, and they have strong hind legs that can be used to bounce to avoid natural enemies. Their body colors are green and brown, which are protective colors for their living environment. Locusts have large mouths and well-developed jaws. They feed on plant leaves. They like to eat reeds, barnyard grass, white grass, dogtooth grass, wormwood, shrimp grass, and sea salicornia. There are more than 12,000 species in the world. They are distributed in tropical and temperate grasslands and desert areas around the world. There are still some differences between them and locusts. Grasshoppers, the common name for locusts, are insects of many types. They have hard mouthparts, narrow and tough forewings, broad and soft hind wings, are good at flying, have well-developed hind limbs, and are good at jumping. They mainly harm grass plants and are agricultural pests, which are extremely harmful to agriculture.

It likes to eat crops such as corn, wheat, sorghum, millet, rice, sorghum, barley, etc. When food shortage occurs, it can also harm crops such as cotton, soybeans and vegetables.

4. What do gray locusts eat?

Adults have the same diet as locust nymphs, both are herbivorous, and they need to supplement their nutrition strongly during the adult stage, accounting for more than 75% of their total food intake in their lifetime. They chew plant leaves and flower buds with their chewing mouthparts, leaving notches and holes. In severe cases, they will eat up the leaves and flower buds of large areas of plants, causing significant economic losses to agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry.

Some species are oligophagous pests, such as the East Asian migratory locust, which only feeds on plants of the Gramineae and Cyperaceae families; some species are polyphagous, such as the large-winged grasshopper. When the season is dry, they are more greedy and excrete a large amount of food without fully digesting it in order to obtain a large amount of water from it to meet physiological metabolic needs, thereby increasing the degree of damage to crops.

The largest locust in Europe, the Gray Locust wears a maroon velvet coat with a white fur tie. Its wings are covered with gray and white spots, with a pale white zigzag line running through them, and the edges of the line are smoky gray. There is a round spot in the center of the wing, like a big black eye, with a pupil that flashes black, white, maroon, cockscomb red, and a rainbow of ever-changing colors.

Locusts, commonly known as "grasshoppers", belong to the order Orthoptera, including species of the superfamily Tetrigoidea, Superfamily Grasshopper, and Superfamily Acridoidea. Among them, the East Asian migratory locust has the widest distribution range in my country and causes the most serious damage. It is the main locust species that causes locust plagues in my country. It is an agricultural pest.

6. How much food do grasshoppers eat?

There is no exact value, because as long as there is something, it will eat it all. If it is within a day, a locust can eat food that is dozens or even hundreds of times its own weight. Therefore, swarms of locusts have an amazing appetite and a strong reproductive ability, which is very scary.

They mainly feed on plant leaves. Wild ones like to eat vegetables such as sweet potatoes, water spinach, and cabbage, but grain crops such as corn, wheat, sorghum, and rice are also within their food range.

8. What do grasshoppers like to eat most?

Grasshoppers mainly eat plant leaves, especially rice leaves, which are a pure natural and pollution-free green food. They also like to eat crops such as corn, wheat, sorghum, millet, rice, sorghum, barley, reeds, barnyard grass, white grass, dogtooth grass, shrimp grass, sea salis and some Artemisia plants.

In addition, if you want to make grasshoppers grow faster, it is recommended to provide them with monocotyledonous and pointed-leaf grass, or your own ryegrass and Mexican corn grass. You can also feed them some bran or chaff feed, but this is only a way to make grasshoppers grow faster.
