Hello

Is the shrimp a sea shrimp or a river shrimp?

Prawns are marine shrimps. Indeed, the prawns we buy now are raised in fresh water, so we mistakenly think that prawns are freshwater shrimps, that is, river shrimps. In fact, they are not. They are just desalinated shrimp fry. They can be raised in fresh water, but they are still marine shrimps. Many marine species have desalinated fry, and freshwater farming of marine species is now very common.

More than a decade ago, most of the prawns were wild sea shrimps. Today, the prawns on the table have become artificially cultivated varieties. After all, the output of wild shrimps is far from meeting our demand for shrimps. Now, most of the prawns are bred in freshwater and cultivated in seawater enclosures. The name comes from "enclosure cultivation". In the past, prawns grew in the fences at the base of rice fields, so they were called "prawn enclosures". Nowadays, most of them are artificially cultivated in breeding ponds built at the estuary. The prawns are not the scientific name of shrimps, but a popular name in life.

Freshwater aquaculture: Freshwater aquaculture refers to the production of aquatic economic animals (fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish, etc.) and aquatic economic plants in ponds, reservoirs, lakes, rivers and other inland waters (including brackish water). It is an important part of the inland aquaculture industry. The main objects of aquaculture are fish. The shrimps farmed include Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Hainan prawns. The crabs farmed are mainly river crabs. At present, China's freshwater farmed fish mainly include: fish, grass carp, silver carp, bighead carp, carp, crucian carp, bream, bream, dace, non-cruciferous carp and other economic fish. China's freshwater aquaculture area and output rank first in the world.

Are shrimps from the sea or the river?

The shrimp likes to live in sandy mud bottoms and shallow seas with low salt content. They usually hide their bodies in the seabed, only protruding their eyes and the front of their heads to breathe, to escape from enemies and wait for food. When the tide is high, they crawl into some slow-flowing inner bays to live. After discovering this characteristic of the shrimp, fishermen set up nets in the inner bays or built stone foundations to wait for the shrimp to fall into the trap.

The older generation of fishermen called these traps "jiwei", so the shrimp caught with jiwei are also called jiwei shrimp. Therefore, in different regions today, the specific shrimps referred to by jiwei shrimp are also different. For example, in the northern market, the "jiwei shrimp" often mentioned refers to fresh, lively, and striped ones. For example, in the southern market, "jiwei shrimp" does not refer to Japanese shrimp! Most of them refer to the earliest "jiwei shrimp" - the knife-headed new shrimp.

The difference between sea shrimp and river shrimp

Many people often confuse river shrimp with sea shrimp. They both belong to the family of long-arm shrimp and look very similar. In fact, there are many differences between river shrimp and sea shrimp.

1. The most obvious difference is the living environment. One kind lives in the sea, and the other kind lives in rivers and streams. Sea shrimps are saltwater shrimps, and river shrimps are freshwater shrimps.

2. The main species of marine shrimp is white shrimp, while the main species of river shrimp is swamp shrimp.

3. White shrimp is also known as shaking shrimp, river bald shrimp, and spring shrimp. It is covered with carapace. The second section of the abdominal carapace covers the outside of the first section of the abdominal carapace. There are two short whiskers. The rest of the body is white and transparent, with small blue or red spots. The shell is very thin but relatively hard. The shrimp body is slightly flattened laterally, and the shell ridges are slightly ridged.

Swamp shrimp, also known as green shrimp and wood shrimp, is also covered with a carapace, but has claws in front of its legs, which are in the shape of pincers. The second pair of legs is particularly large, more than twice its body length, and strong and powerful, which can be used to attack and defend against enemies. The shrimp body is green with brown spots, the shell is very thin and soft, the shrimp body is cylindrical, and the shell ridge is round. The shrimp meat is translucent jade color, and after cooking, the double white shrimp is crystal clear, and the taste is more elastic, smooth and tender.

4. River shrimps are mainly green shrimps, with a green body and brown spots, and a thin and soft shell. Although they are smaller in size, their protein content is no less than that of sea shrimps, and their calcium content is also higher. However, since river water is easily polluted, the quality of the shrimps may be affected.

Because shrimps live in the ocean, although there is pollution, the impact is not great. Therefore, they taste delicious and are the first choice on modern people's tables.

5. The shell of sea shrimp is hard, while that of river shrimp is soft. Sea shrimp is slightly larger, while that of river shrimp is slightly smaller. As for the taste, it depends on personal taste.

Tips: Whether it is river shrimp or sea shrimp, they are both delicious. As for which one has higher nutritional value, they are actually similar and there is not much difference. If you like to eat sea shrimp, it is okay to eat more. If you like to eat river shrimp, it is okay to eat more.
