Academician Zeng Chengkui Academician Zeng Chengkui is a world-renowned marine biologist, one of the main pioneers of marine science in my country, one of the founders of my country's algae research and one of the pioneers of my country's algae chemical industry, and a senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Academician Zeng Chengkui has won the "Outstanding Contribution Award" of the American Phycological Society in 2001, the "Shandong Province Highest Science and Technology Award in 2002", and the "National Love Donation Award in 2004" awarded by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China. His "Research on the Principles of Kelp Cultivation" won the National Science Conference Award in 1978. In the early 1950s, my country used the autumn seedling cultivation method to cultivate kelp. This method is successful, but the disadvantage is that the kelp has a short growth period and cannot grow large. In addition, there is the threat of weeds and low productivity. In view of the shortcomings of the autumn seedling cultivation method, Zeng Chengkui led his assistants to successfully study the method of low-temperature summer cultivation of kelp seedlings. They used the kelp that matured in early summer as seeds, collected the spores released by it on the attachment base, and then cultivated it under fluorescent light, low temperature, and running water conditions. By early October, it can grow into small seedlings, and then move it to the sea for 20 days. This not only prolongs the growth period of kelp, but also avoids the threat of weeds, increasing the yield of cultivated kelp by 30-50%. In order to expand the cultivation of kelp to a wider "barren" sea area, they created the kelp pot fertilization method. Using special pots to hold fertilizers to control the diffusion rate of fertilizers, it greatly reduced the loss of fertilizers caused by flowing seawater, thus ensuring the fertilizer supply of kelp. Tests in 1954 and 1955 proved that the pot fertilization method could increase kelp production by more than 3 times, and the products met the standards of first-class or second-class kelp. The above two scientific research results have played a great role in promoting the development of kelp production along the Yellow Sea coast of my country. Since kelp is suitable for growing in low-temperature seawater, it was only cultivated in the northern seas in the 1950s. In the late 1950s, Zeng Chengkui and his assistants studied and solved the key problem of kelp's southward migration, and successfully transplanted this sub-arctic seaweed to the coasts of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong provinces, greatly increasing the total production of kelp in my country. Zeng Chengkui's research on the principles of seaweed cultivation won the National Science Conference Award in 1978. Now, my country is the world's largest kelp producer, and 80% of the world's kelp is produced in my country. Therefore, my country has built the world's largest alginate extraction industry with kelp as the main raw material, and its products are exported to five continents. |
