CATDOLL: Is the bamboo fish cold-resistant?

1. Is the bamboo fish cold-resistant?

Bamboo shoots are bottom-dwelling, burrowing fish that often live in the mud or grass at the bottom of rivers, reservoirs, and ponds with relatively clear water or slight currents. They also often live in cracks in the sand and gravel, caves, and debris on the shore. Their living water layer is below 2 meters. They are not very good at swimming and cannot swim quickly or over long distances. They are docile and have a strong ability to adapt to low-oxygen environments. They are mostly active at night and like to hide in the mud during the day. They can burrow into the mud to a depth of 1 meter for up to 10 hours. The suitable temperature range is 15~35℃, and the optimal temperature is 25~30℃. They die in large numbers below 10℃. They can adapt to acidic water with a pH value of 5 and 15% brackish water. [2]

Every autumn and winter, in the rare aquaculture areas such as Qiangongzhou and Muniuzhou in Hongmei Town, you can see a vast expanse of white, like a huge white winter quilt, covering the entire aquaculture area tightly. These white coverings are used to protect the rare aquatic products such as bamboo fish and lobsters in the aquaculture area to survive the winter.

Uncle Nian has been raising bamboo shoots in the Muniuzhou aquaculture area for several years. With a certain amount of breeding experience, Uncle Nian knows how to keep his fish and shrimps safe during the winter. The total area of bamboo shoots and shrimps raised by his family is about 70 mu. Before the National Day this year, he asked someone to find a frame to build a shed, but he only covered the entire shed with plastic film a month ago. "The time for building the shed this year is about the same as last year, but the time for covering the film is later than in previous years." Because of the late film covering, Uncle Nian suffered a certain loss. Uncle Nian said that the weather got cold earlier this year, and the first wave of cold air after the National Day arrived. As a result, some of his bamboo shoot fry that had been raised for more than three months were frostbitten. "About 3,000 bamboo shoot fry were frostbitten. The frostbitten bamboo shoot fry looked like downy mildew, and many died soon after." Bamboo shoot fry are not very cold-resistant and are more susceptible to frostbite than adult fish that have been raised for a longer period of time.

It is understood that the bamboo shoot fish is a tropical fish species with a suitable temperature range of 15-35℃, an optimum temperature of 25-30℃, and a large number of fish die below 10℃. In recent years, driven by the radiation of local leading aquaculture enterprises such as Songhu Aquatic Products, bamboo shoot fish farming in Hongmei Town has quietly emerged. In addition to scattered bamboo shoot fish farming, the largest continuous farming area exceeds 800 mu. As the first choice of local farmers, the rosenbergii shrimp is native to tropical and subtropical waters. It adapts to the living water temperature of 24-30℃. When the water temperature drops to 16℃, it moves slowly and gradually dies. Therefore, it is also necessary to build a shed to keep warm when farming rosenbergii shrimp in winter.

As tropical aquatic products, the growth habits of bamboo fish and prawns determine the requirements and difficulty of their breeding technology. Ensuring the safety of bamboo fish and prawns overwintering is the most basic breeding technology requirement. Therefore, almost all farmers who breed bamboo fish or shrimp will make good wintering safety guarantees before the winter comes and build wintering sheds in advance. At the same time, strengthen the management of the winter shed during the wintering process. If the temperature rises to a high level, the shed film will be appropriately removed for ventilation. When the temperature is low, the edge of the shed film will be compacted to maintain the water temperature of the fish pond in the shed.

"When the water temperature is below 20 degrees, the fish will not eat. When the water temperature is below 10 degrees, they will all freeze to death. It is useless to build a shed." Uncle Nian said. "The only way is to find a way to heat the shed, such as using charcoal fire."

2. Where can I buy tropical fish in Jingjiang, Jiangsu?

You can go and have a look at the Rainbow Aquarium on Yupo Road in Jingjiang.

3. How to choose tropical fish?

The details are as follows: (1) Selection of species For those who are raising tropical fish for the first time, it is best to choose species that are easy to raise. Such as guppies, zebrafish, swordfish, etc. They are resistant to low temperatures, have a omnivorous diet, and are highly adaptable. These fish are not very demanding on water quality and are easy to raise. For large species, it is generally appropriate to purchase a few; for small and medium-sized species, it is appropriate to purchase dozens or hundreds of them. The number of species should be 1 to 4.

(2) Individual selection When purchasing tropical fish, do not choose too large or too small ones. Generally, adult fish have poor adaptability to new environments, while fry have stronger ability to adapt to new environments than fry or adult fish during their growth and development. Therefore, when purchasing tropical fish, the first thing to consider is to purchase fry. The size of the individual should be determined according to the different adult fish species. If the adult fish is only a few centimeters long, choose 2 to 3 cm fry; if the adult fish is 10 cm long, choose 4 to 5 cm fry; for large fish, choose 6 to 9 cm fry.

In the same nest, choose larger young fish (large individuals tend to grow faster and bigger). At the same time, choose healthy individuals that are active, have bright and clear body colors, and are plump and strong. When purchasing, observe whether there are scars on their body surface, whether the scales have fallen off, etc. (3) When purchasing, mixed breeding is often carried out to increase the scenery in the aquarium. Mixed breeding cannot simply consider whether the color combination is beautiful, but also whether the species are coordinated and whether the individuals are suitable.

4. How to release tropical fish?

If this link is not handled well, problems are very likely to occur, especially when fish in a bag with low water temperature are placed in a tank with high water temperature. The most common problem is that the fish will get air bubble disease; the second is that the pH difference is large, and the fish are prone to get sick or stop eating. Why do fish get air bubble disease? Generally speaking, when fish are moved in water with large temperature and pressure differences, air bubble disease will occur. For example: when a fish with low water temperature is placed in a tank with high water temperature, the fish's body temperature rises sharply, and the oxygen solubility decreases, causing part of the dissolved oxygen inside and outside the fish's body, including in the fins, to become gaseous oxygen. There is gas in the fish's body tissues, and thus the fish gets air bubble disease.

Adding hot water to a low-temperature fish tank can easily cause all the fish in the tank to get gas bubble disease. Severe gas bubble disease will cause death quickly, usually floating on the water surface (because the body tissues are also filled with gas), and cannot sink for a long time. What should I do? There is a safest and most reliable way, which is to fill the newly opened fish bag (or put several bags of fish into a tank without other water) with air, while adjusting the water temperature (raising or lowering it to the same as the tank in which it is put), and slowly add the water to be put into the tank (heating can be increased by using a heater).

The key to this step is aeration. Aeration can make the dissolved oxygen effect of the bag water equal to that of the water to be put into the tank under constant temperature and pressure. In this way, there will be no problem at all when these new fish are put into the (predetermined) large tank. As for the pH difference, if the fish are sensitive, it will take several days to gradually adjust it to the same pH as the water to be put into the tank. Be patient. As for the hardness, it can only be increased or decreased by 9 mg/L (i.e. 0.

5° dH), which also ensures that there will be no problems.
