CATDOLL: Silver carp and bighead carp habits (silver carp feeding habits)

Habits of silver carp and bighead carp

The feeding habits of silver carp, bighead carp and fry are similar to those of most other fish. Freshly hatched fry eat the yolk in the yolk sac.

When the young fish begin to forage for food, they feed on small plankton. As they grow, they begin to feed on larger plankton.

Swimming organisms, nauplii, cladocerans or artificially placed bait.

Feeding characteristics of adult fish: Fish feed on different food objects. Silver carp and bighead carp are plankton-feeding fish, and silver carp and bighead carp mainly take plankton as their main food source.

The big mouth and long and dense gills of silver carp and bighead carp are very helpful for filtering plankton in the water. The feeding habits of bighead carp and silver carp are very similar, but anglers must pay attention to the fact that there are still big differences: Generally speaking, silver carp mainly feeds on phytoplankton and secondarily on zooplankton.

Specifically, bighead carp mainly eats small mosquitoes, rotifers, copepods and cladocerans, while silver carp mainly eats algae, plant debris and small granular seeds. In addition, bighead carp loves duck manure, so many fish ponds raise ducks in the ponds.

Silver carp and bighead carp both like vegetarian smells, but there are also big differences. Many anglers know that silver carp and bighead carp like sour and smelly baits, but the difference is that silver carp prefers a mixed smell of sour, sweet and smelly, while bighead carp prefers a mixed smell of fishy, fragrant and smelly.

Silver carp and bighead carp habits:

Bighead carp grows in freshwater lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and ponds. They are mostly distributed in the middle and upper layers of freshwater areas. They are warm-water fish, and the water temperature suitable for their growth is 25-30℃. They can adapt to a relatively fertile water environment. Juveniles and immature individuals generally grow in lakes along rivers and affiliated water bodies. Their main food is zooplankton in the water.

The lateral line is complete, with lateral line scales 91 to 108. All fins have no spines, dorsal fin soft rays 3 (unbranched soft rays) + 7 (branched soft rays); anal fin 3 (unbranched soft rays) + 12 to 13 (branched soft rays), pelvic fin 1 (unbranched soft rays) + 8 (branched soft rays).

The pharyngeal teeth are in one row, with 4 to 4 teeth, flat, with wide teeth and fine granular protrusions. The dorsal side of the body is grayish black with a slight golden luster, and the ventral side is silvery white; the sides of the body have many irregular black spots. The fins are grayish white with many black fine rolling spots.

When do silver carp eat?

Silver carp's food has obvious seasonality. In spring, summer and autumn, it spends most of its time swimming in the middle and upper layers of the water to find food, and in winter it dives into deep water to hibernate. It is a typical filter-feeding fish, relying on the special structure of its gills to filter out plankton in the water.

Main food: Silver carp feed on plankton throughout their lives. In the fry stage, they mainly eat zooplankton. When they are more than 1.5 cm long, they gradually turn to eating phytoplankton. They also like to eat grass carp feces and chicken and cow dung.

They also eat soy milk, bean dregs powder, bran and rice bran, and prefer artificial micro-granules and mixed feed. They are very interested in sour food and have a strong appetite for rotten food. Silver carp likes to eat rotten food and is often raised with grass carp. Silver carp eats grass carp feces, so there is a saying that one grass can feed three silver carps.

Additional information:

Silver carp is lively, likes to jump, and has the habit of swimming upstream, but its movements are not very agile and it is rather clumsy. Silver carp likes fertile water, and similar individuals often gather in groups and swim to the middle and upper layers of the water, especially in clear water areas with fertile water.

Appetite is proportional to water temperature. Silver carp likes high temperature, and the most suitable water temperature is 23℃~32℃. In the hot summer, silver carp has the strongest appetite. July to August in the north is a good time to fish for silver carp.

The silver carp grows fast and has high yield. The age of sexual maturity of silver carp is 1-2 years earlier than that of grass carp, and the mature individuals are also smaller. Female fish weighing more than 3 kg can reach maturity.

According to my experience: When the lowest temperature in spring is above 15°, it is the golden season for hand-pole fishing. The lowest temperature in autumn is not lower than 10°. This period is the golden season for hand-pole fishing for silver carp and bighead carp. If you use a casting rod, acid bait, water monster or explosive hook to connect a large vertical curved float to catch silver carp: the best season is when the lowest temperature in spring is above 20° and the lowest temperature in autumn is not lower than 15°.

I guess I'll eat when I'm hungry.

Silver carp's food has obvious seasonality. In spring and autumn, in addition to plankton, they also eat a lot of detritus. In summer, the lower the water level, the more they eat. In winter, they eat less and move less.

Silver carp is a filter-feeding fish that feeds on plankton and likes to eat grass carp feces and chicken and cow dung placed by the fishermen. It is very interested in sour food and has a strong appetite for rotten food.

Pond breeding

1. Fish breeding

Stocking of fish fry: In mid-to-late May, when the water temperature in the pond is stable above 18°C, it is the appropriate time to stock. Stock silver carp and black carp at a density of 3-5 per square meter.

Feeding and management: After the fry are put into the pond, they mainly filter-feed on planktonic plants and animals and also eat feed debris.

Adult fish farming: fish stocking specifications and density. The specifications of overwintering fish are 100-200 grams per fish, and the stocking density is 0.4-0.5 fish/O.

Silver carp is a cultured fish and the time of catching is based on the time when the carp leaves the pond.

2. Winter management

Overwintering density: The overwintering density of mature fish and fingerlings in ponds is generally 0.3-0.6K/O. It can be adjusted appropriately according to pond conditions.

Requirements for overwintering fish: The fish should be free of disease and injury, and be plump and strong.

Wintering method: Wintering ponds should be relatively clean, with good water retention, and the water depth under ice should be kept at about 1.5 meters. Pools should be combined according to specifications: Before freezing, 1.5-3.0 kg of 90% crystal trichlorfon per hectare should be sprayed throughout the pond. The amount of phytoplankton in the hidden water should be kept at 25-50 mg/l. The water surface should be kept transparent, and snow on the ice should be cleared in time. Ice holes should be drilled to observe water quality and fish activities.
