CATDOLL: Is tilapia a marine fish or a river fish? Can it be farmed?

1. Is tilapia a marine fish or a river fish? Can it be farmed?

Tilapia is a river fish that lives in rivers. It is not a marine fish and cannot adapt to the environment in the ocean. Tilapia is native to Africa. They live in low-latitude places with suitable water temperatures and were later introduced to freshwater basins in other countries. They are also distributed in my country, mainly living in low-latitude provinces, such as Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Tilapia generally inhabits the middle and lower layers of waters and likes to live in places with abundant aquatic plants and sufficient food. 1. Is tilapia a marine fish or a river fish? There are many types of fish living in my country, and tilapia is one of them. There are many aspects to classify fish. If you start with the living environment, fish can be divided into marine fish or river fish, living in sea water and river water respectively. Tilapia is one of the river fish and lives in rivers.

Tilapia is native to Africa, and lives in freshwater basins with relatively low latitudes and relatively high water temperatures. Later, they were introduced to other countries, and are currently distributed in my country. However, their living habits have not changed, and they still like to live in places with relatively high water temperatures. Therefore, they mainly live in low-latitude areas in my country, and the main provinces are Guangdong Province, Guangxi Province and Hainan Province. Tilapia likes to move in the middle and lower layers of the water and generally does not go to the upper layer. They will only go to the upper layer when the air pressure is relatively low and the dissolved oxygen content in the water is relatively low. Tilapia is an omnivorous fish, but they prefer to eat plant-based food. Therefore, tilapia generally move in freshwater basins rich in aquatic plants.

2. Can tilapia be farmed? Tilapia is native to Africa, and was later introduced to other continents. It is currently distributed in my country. Tilapia is a fish that can be artificially farmed in my country, and it is also one of the main aquatic products in my country. As a farmed fish, tilapia has obvious advantages. They grow very fast, have a short growth cycle, and have a particularly strong ability to reproduce. They are also very adaptable, have good resistance, are not prone to illness, and are not picky eaters. Therefore, many breeders choose tilapia as their breeding object. When breeding them, a breeding pond is generally required, and the depth of the pond water must be at least 1 meter deep. The water temperature is very important and cannot be too low. In addition, they must be provided with sufficient food, and plankton or plant debris can be their food.

2. What is tilapia pond farming like?

The pond culture technology of tilapia is not much different from that of the four major carps, and production can proceed as usual. At present, in places in my country where there are conditions for tilapia to overwinter or where the supply of fry is convenient, pond culture with tilapia as the main body can give full play to the group production potential of tilapia. In ponds dominated by the four major carps, as long as the water temperature can be kept constant above 18℃, tilapia can also be used as a matching variety. Tilapia is mainly fed with compound feed, with a daily feeding rate of 5%~7% of the fish body weight, and 4~5 feedings per time; water is added (changed) once every 15~20 days (10~15 days in high temperature season) to keep the water level above 2m; one 2~3kW aerator is equipped per mu, and it is turned on once in the afternoon and early morning every day, for 2~3h each time. In high temperature season, each time should be increased by 1~2h. When the water temperature drops to 15℃, the tilapia should be caught.

3. Is it necessary to apply fertilizers in tilapia farming?

Tilapia is an omnivorous fish, and requires a certain degree of fertility in the aquaculture water. Fertilization of aquaculture water is an important technical means to supplement water nutrients and improve water productivity, but improper fertilization (referring to excessive fertilization) can cause the water quality of aquaculture water to deteriorate and pollute the environment, causing eutrophication of natural water bodies. Fertilization is mainly used for pond farming, and the types of fertilizers include organic fertilizers and inorganic fertilizers. The organic fertilizers allowed to be used are compost, fermented manure, manure, green manure, biogas fertilizer and fermented feces; the inorganic fertilizers allowed to be used are urea, ammonium carbonate and superphosphate.

4. How to feed tilapia in farmed fish?

The "four determinations" method should be implemented. Determination of quality: the feed should be fresh and palatable, and the nutritional value should be increased as much as possible. Do not feed moldy and spoiled feed; Positioning: feeding should be done in a fixed feeding area, and floating feed can be thrown in a floating frame; Timing: adult fish ponds are generally fed twice a day, once at 8:00-10:00 and once at 14:00-16:00; Quantity: feed according to the amount each time, and it is required to feed evenly, not too much or too little. Feed more on sunny days, feed less on rainy days, and stop feeding when the weather is hot and humid and thunderstorms are about to come. In actual breeding production, feeding acclimatization is also required.

5. What is the flow-through farming of tilapia like?

Tilapia is currently mainly farmed in high-density flowing water or factory farming, especially warm flowing water farming, which can use factory waste heat and underground hot springs to effectively save energy resources, achieve group synchronous reproduction, breed seedlings throughout the year, or cultivate tilapia adult fish throughout the year. The following aspects should be noted in warm water farming:

(1) The breeding pond should not be too large. Generally, 30 to 50 m3 is appropriate for adult fish breeding, but the water source must be self-flowing. For example, if a 50 m3 flowing water pond is built, the water depth is measured in 1 meter, and the flow rate must be guaranteed to reach 100 m3 per hour to obtain high yields.

(2) The temperature of the warm running water in the pool must be kept within the appropriate temperature range, preferably around 28°C.

(3) The stocking density depends on the flow rate. If the flow rate is large and the dissolved oxygen is high, more fish can be stocked. Generally, the dissolved oxygen in the pond water can be maintained above 3 mg/L.

(4) Since tilapia grows rapidly and has obvious size differentiation, they should be raised in different grades. Grading should be done every 15 to 30 days to adjust the density and size to achieve the best growth conditions for tilapia.

(5) Intensive farming requires feeding a nutritionally complete diet, with a protein level of 30%. The daily feeding amount should be 2.5% to 3% of body weight, 5 to 6 times a day, and each feeding time should be more than 30 minutes.
