CATDOLL: Is a seahorse a fish? Why?

1. Is the seahorse a fish? Why?

The seahorse is named for its head which resembles a horse's head, but interestingly, it is a peculiar and precious small fish near land and shallow sea. It belongs to the genus Hippocampus of the family Syngnathidae in the order Syngnathidae. Its head is flat on the sides, with two lobes on each side.

There are two nostrils, the head is at right angles to the trunk, the chest and abdomen are protruding, and are composed of 10 to 12 bone rings. The tail is slender, with four edges, often curled, and the whole body is completely wrapped by membrane bones. There is a spineless dorsal fin, no pelvic fins and caudal fins. The male seahorse has a brood pouch on the ventral side, where eggs are laid and hatched, and can reproduce 2-3 generations a year.

Seahorses are distributed all over the world, but there are more tropical species. Seahorses usually live in coastal areas with dense seaweed or many reefs, or they attach themselves to floating objects and drift with the current. They can swim upright with their dorsal fins swinging, and feed on small crustaceans. The coasts around Hainan Island and the offshore waters of the Xisha Islands are very suitable for the reproduction and growth of seahorses. There are more than ten species in total, but the species with higher medicinal value are the spotted seahorse, the spiny seahorse, the Japanese seahorse, and the seahorse. At present, artificial breeding of seahorses has been successful, and Hainan can develop the breeding of this special and superior species according to local conditions.

Seahorse is a valuable traditional Chinese medicine with high economic value. It has medicinal functions such as strengthening the body, tonifying the kidney and strengthening yang, relaxing muscles and tendons, relieving inflammation and pain, calming the nerves, relieving cough and relieving asthma. It is especially effective in treating diseases of the nervous system. It has been favored by people since ancient times, and men are particularly fond of it. Therefore, the domestic and foreign market demand for seahorse is very large. According to reports, the annual sales of seahorse in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore alone is about 16 million. At present, the sales unit price of seahorse (dried product) in herbal medicine stores and seafood stores in Haikou, Sanya and other places is about 5,000 yuan/kg, and that of small seahorse is about 3,000 yuan/kg. The sales unit price in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other places is as high as about 1,200 US dollars/kg. Therefore, buying high-quality and low-priced seahorse in Hainan has become a shopping activity for many Chinese and foreign tourists to Hainan.

Seahorses are usually caught using gillnets, purse seines or trawls. The processing method is very simple, just wash and dry. In addition to being used to make various synthetic drugs, seahorses can also be taken directly for health and treatment. There are several ways to take them: 1. Dry and grind the seahorses into powder, soak them in pure rice wine for a month, and drink a small cup every night before going to bed; 2. Add Chinese angelica, Astragalus, Codonopsis, Chinese yam, red dates, wolfberry and other Chinese medicines and chicken stew soup, and eat it as a daily tonic; 3. Use a pig kidney each time, cut it in the middle, clamp 1-2 seahorses, put it in a porcelain cup and stew it in water, and eat it before going to bed at night.

2. What should I do if a yellow ball fish gives birth? What are the signs before a yellow ball fish gives birth?

The yellow mullet has a big belly, and the male fish also has a big belly.

Generally, a cycle lasts 28-40 days after maturity, and small fish will be laid in each cycle.

There are obvious fetal spots on the abdomen before delivery.

3. Why can’t fish go ashore?

Fish cannot breathe through their gills when they come ashore

4. Does anyone know the details of the nose-walking animal? Where exactly is it found?

Strange Animals That Walk on Their Noses

Except for a few animals such as whales, mammals generally have four legs, which they use to run for food and escape from enemies. However, it is unexpected that there is a kind of monster in the world that does not walk with legs but with its nose, with its big head facing downwards and its tail facing upwards. In zoology, they are called "nasal animals".

The nasal crawlers live in the Haiai Islands, a group of ancient islands in the South Pacific. The archipelago was discovered by the Swede Umvist in 1941. Umvist escaped from the Japanese army's prisoner-of-war camp during World War II and drifted to Haida Taifei Island in the archipelago. This is a small island 32 kilometers long from north to south and 16 kilometers wide from east to west. It is made of limestone and clay slate. There is an active volcano 1,752 meters high on the island. This archipelago covers an area of 1,690 square kilometers and has more than 20 islands of different sizes. There are tropical plants and unique biological communities. There were more than 700 indigenous people on the island. The residents called the archipelago "the island of ancient times." Now there is a Haiai Darwin Institute on the coast of the archipelago, where an international biological expedition team lives to observe nasal crawlers. They have obtained a large amount of ecological observation data and records of nasal crawlers there. The discovery of nasal-moving animals and the scientific research results caused a sensation in the international zoological community. Zoologists unanimously agreed that this was a major discovery in the field of zoology in this century.

Proboscis is a viviparous mammal, with 14 families and 189 species. They have a large family and occupy a certain position in the history of animal evolution. Their ancestors are likely insectivores, and they took a path of super evolution under special geographical conditions.

The biggest feature of proboscis is that their noses are very special. Some have only one strange nose, while others have four or more noses. Their noses are in various shapes. Some are like pillars, some are like trumpets, and some are like snails. Their noses also have many functions. They can not only crawl and jump with their noses, but also catch insects with their noses. The nose plays the primary role in their lives. Zoologists have given their noses a name called "nasal walking organs", or "nasal organs" for short. The so-called nasal organs are just a functional concept, not a morphological concept. Their noses can never be compared with the noses of elephants, pigs or other animals.

Another characteristic of proboscis is the gradual degeneration of limbs. Their limbs have long lost their original function as organs of movement, and their limb functions have been replaced by the nose. Some of the hind legs of proboscis have degenerated into two short protuberances, and some have no hind legs at all. The front legs still exist as a grasping organ, but they are rarely used.

The third characteristic of the proboscis is that most of the body is covered with hair. The fur has a variety of colors, and some even have hard dace. Their fur is very fine, shiny, and very beautiful. The toes, ears, head, and nose are generally hairless.

The fourth characteristic of proboscis is that the tail is also well developed. Some have tails longer than the body and can use them to catch food; some have tails with poisonous hooks that can kill the enemy.

The reproductive capacity of nose crawlers is not very strong. Generally, they only have one cub per litter, and the gestation period is 7 months to 1 year. It is rare for them to have more than one cub per litter. Because the islands where they live have fewer natural enemies, their survival rate is relatively high.

Unfortunately, in a secret nuclear weapons test in the South Pacific in 1957, the archipelago sank and the entire rhinoceros was destroyed by a "bomb". From its discovery in 1941 to its destruction in 1957, the rhinoceros was only in front of humans for a short 16 years, and not even a living specimen was left.
