As the water temperature drops, the activity rhythm of silver carp gradually slows down and their feeding decreases. In the north, generally in late November, when the water temperature drops below 6°C, silver carp's feeding activity basically stops.

There is evidence that after the water freezes over, silver carp can still move in a small area under the ice and eat. (Since they are filter-feeding fish, they will eat as long as they breathe, so strictly speaking, silver carp do not stop eating in an absolute sense, they just eat very little.)

3. How to identify wild silver carp

The mouth of wild silver carp in the Yangtze River, when observed from the back, has a relatively round upper jaw, while the lower jaw is only slightly more protruding than the upper jaw, and the edge of the lower lip is light yellow or white; the color of the inner side of the pectoral fin is similar to the body color, and there are basically no black spots at the base; the body is relatively slender, with a standard length/body height generally greater than 3, and the dorsal side is gray-black with a slight yellowish color.
