Recently, there has been a serious divergence in the price trends of king crabs at home and abroad.

In the domestic market, the supply of red king crabs from the Russian Far East is sufficient, and large quantities of live crabs are sold to China and South Korea. The price has dropped from $40/kg this summer to $23/kg, a drop of more than 40%.

In the US market, the price of medium-sized king crab has increased by more than $3.00/lb ($6.7/kg) in the past five months (compared with the same period in 2017), with 16/20 golden king crab prices up 29% and 16/20 red crabs up 25%. 4/7 red king crabs are sold in the US at around $21/lb, 6/9 red crabs are priced at around $20/lb, and 9/12 crabs are priced at around $19/lb.

According to documents from the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC), the U.S. West Coast king crab catch limit (TAC) was set at 1,950 tons during the 2018-2019 fishing season, a 35% cut from the previous season, and U.S. king crab production also fell to the lowest level since 1996.

Norway, another major king crab producing area, has also significantly reduced its fishing quota for 2019. The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) said that the king crab fishing quota for 2019 is 1,500 tons, a reduction of 350 tons from 2018. Among them, the fishing quota for public king crabs is 1,750 tons, and the female crabs are 100 tons. In addition, king crabs with a carapace length of less than 130 mm will not be allowed to be caught on land.

Harald Nesvik, the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries, said: "In recent years, the Norwegian king crab resources have declined significantly. The scientific community has warned the industry that if we do not pay attention to protection, wild resources will soon be exhausted. We cannot allow this to happen. It is our responsibility to strengthen the management of king crab fishing."

Russia is the world's largest producer of king crab, but its specific production data is not very transparent.

Russian king crabs are produced in the Barron Sea and the Far East. Earlier this year, at the Global Seafood Market Conference (GSMC) held in Florida, USA, experts estimated that Russia's king crab production in 2018 would be about 26,000 tons, an increase of 5,000 tons from 2017.

In the past two years, the king crab trade has undergone a fundamental change, with more than 50% of king crabs being sold alive. King crabs caught in the Baron Sea region of Russia are only available in frozen form, but the Far East region can produce more live crabs.

Norway is also actively changing its transportation methods. In the near future, more than 70% of Norwegian king crabs will be exported alive.

2. What is the difference between emperor crab and king crab and how much is the market price per pound in 2022?

The former is about 50 to 160 yuan per catty, and the latter is about 350 to 500 yuan per catty.

The difference between the two

1. The latter

The latter is also called stone crab or rock crab, which is a crustacean of the family Stone Crab. It is not a real crab. They are mainly distributed in cold seas. It is named because of its huge size and is known as the "king of crabs". The latter belongs to deep-sea crabs and can survive at a depth of up to 850 meters.

The latter has an amazing reproduction rate, and each female crab can produce nearly 10,000 live crabs every year. The latter usually lays eggs in a shallow beach about 350 meters away from April to June every year. During the breeding season, the female and male mate and hatch. Generally speaking, in the lifespan of a 30-year-old crab, the reproductive period is four years.

2. The former

The former refers to the giant shore crab, which is native to Australia and belongs to the family Crabidae of the order Brachyura. It is the heaviest crab in existence, weighing up to 36 kg when fat; its carapace is relatively hard, reddish-white, and fan-shaped; its claws are thick and its claws are black. The giant shore crab can live in marine and estuarine environments, and is best suited to mud, sand or rocky seabeds, aquatic plants and swamps.

Edible value of the former

The former is huge, fat and heavy, with a hard shell, red and black, creamy and meaty, and very refreshing. The large former is as big as a basin, looks very majestic and majestic, and makes people salivate. The way to eat is the same as the king crab. It is worth mentioning that the former has the richest oil reserves in the shell of the crab, so it should be cooked for a while longer to fully cook out the oil, so the soup base will taste more delicious.

The former can usually be stir-fried with ginger and scallions or used to make porridge, but there is also a simple way in Australia, which is to use the former directly to make soup. Cut the whole crab into several large pieces, cook them directly with clear soup, and then take out the crabs to eat. The deliciousness of the crab meat is simply indescribable.

3. How much does a king crab weigh?

A king crab weighs about 3 to 4 kilograms, and the largest can reach 10 kilograms.

King crabs are not real crabs. They are mainly found in cold seas. They are named after their huge size and are known as the king of crabs. King crabs are a type of crab that is very rich in nutrients such as protein and trace elements. They are very good for the body and eating crabs is beneficial for the recovery of tuberculosis. However, the market price is comparable to gold, so those who can afford to eat king crabs are really "kings".

The price of king crabs changes every day and is hard to predict, because live king crabs are about 600 yuan per kilogram, and this price is for a king crab of more than 1.5 kilograms. If they are frozen, they are cheaper. They are usually farmed, and I have never seen wild ones. However, in general, wild crabs should be more expensive than farmed ones. Live crabs can survive for 24 hours in a cold and humid environment after being taken out of water. After proper ice coating, frozen crab segments can be stored for 1 year.

4. What is the current market price of king crab?

King crab is a very famous crab. It is mainly distributed in cold waters. Because of its large size, it is called the king of crabs. King crabs are tender and delicious, and are loved by consumers. Many people eat the finished king crabs, so they don't know how much a king crab costs per pound, or how much it costs to buy a king crab. The price of king crabs is about 400 to 600 per kilogram. Depending on the size, the price will vary.
