The giant squid lives in the deep waters of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It is about 20 meters long and weighs about 2-3 tons. It is the largest invertebrate in the world. It inhabits a wide range of water layers and is not a typical deep-sea species. The main living water layer is 200-400 meters. It has a certain range of vertical movement in the continental shelf waters within 200 meters. Juveniles and adults are important bait for sperm whales. Juveniles are also prey for mid-layer fish (such as black finned hairtail and sailfish). The giant squid feeds on other cephalopods (such as sail squid and squid) and small fish (quoted from World Cephalopods, published in January 2009). |
