2. How to distinguish black carp, bighead carp, grass carp, silver carp, carp and crucian carp

Silver carp and bighead carp have melanin on their ventral folds, while grass carp does not, which divides them into two categories.

The melanocytes on the belly folds of silver carp are dense and neatly arranged to form a distinct black line. The fish body is narrow, thin and grayish white.

The melanocytes on the belly folds of bighead carp are sparse, scattered and blurred. The fish body is large, fat, and has a light yellow color.

The melanocyte cluster holes at the lower corner of the base of the black carp's tail fin are long, two, and densely pigmented, and its back is curved, so it is called "hunchback black carp".

The group of melanocytes at the base of the grass carp's tail fin is round, single, and lightly pigmented, with obvious "red veins" at the rear end of the anus.

Compared with grass carp, silver carp and bighead carp, carp and crucian carp have short and thick bodies, and the part behind the swim bladder shrinks rapidly. Carp has a light ochre yellow body, gray-black pigment (blue veins), triangular eyes protruding to both sides, and an oblong swim bladder. Crucian carp has a light yellow body, black pigment, small splayed eyes, and wide eye spacing.
