CATDOLL: Will the Brazilian red-eared turtle swim to the surface of the water turtle when it is deprived of oxygen?

Will the Brazilian red-eared turtle swim to the surface of the water turtle when it is short of oxygen?

Why do red-eared sliders always float on the water and cannot go down?

1. It is to bask in the sun.

2. There is a lack of oxygen in the water or the water is turbid.

The breeding environment of Brazilian turtles:

Red-eared sliders, also known as red-eared sliders, spend most of their time in water and prefer clear water. Therefore, water quality is very important. In summer, change the water once every 10 to 15 days. If the water is brown-green or blue-green, it means that the water is too "rich" and all the water should be changed in time. From June to September, due to the high temperature, it is advisable to change the water 3 to 4 hours after feeding. In winter, the turtles hibernate and the water can be changed less or not at all. Turtles always grow from small, and when you buy them, you buy small ones, so you will think that they can be kept in small, low-cost boxes, but they can grow to a fairly large size - 30 cm is not uncommon. At this size, they require spacious places, good filtration systems and time to spend on them. If your initial reason for buying them is that they are cheap, it is not worth it. Because if you want to keep them well, you have to spend 100 times more than the price to maintain them, including boxes, heaters, filters, lights, food and your hard work. This is not an exaggeration. How much food do you spend from hatchlings to adults? This does not include the cost of their illness and the operation of these equipment. For amateurs who raise them, they should not provide equipment casually just because they are cheap, but should raise them seriously.

The integration of red-eared sliders and other turtle species such as yellow-bellied sliders has increased the difficulty of species identification. In captivity, they often hybridize with other aquatic turtles. The red-eared slider may be the first species of turtles to undergo color variation (such as albino and colorful) through artificial breeding. It has the characteristics of large individuals, miscellaneous diet, and few diseases. It has great development prospects in terms of consumption, appreciation and economic utilization. The red-eared slider is lively and more active than any freshwater turtle produced in China. It reacts sensitively to water sounds and vibrations, and dives into the water once frightened. The red-eared slider is an aquatic turtle. It likes to live in clear ponds. At noon, it likes to lie on the shore to bask in the sun. The rest of the time, it floats on the water to rest or wanders in the water. The activity of the red-eared slider changes with the change of environmental temperature. The optimal temperature is 20℃~32℃. It hibernates below 11℃ and hibernates deeply below 6℃. Based on the experience of raising this turtle at Longtou Pavilion Amphibian and Reptile Research Institute in Haining City, Zhejiang Province, the breeding and management techniques of the red-eared slider are introduced as follows:

The red-eared sliders seen in the domestic market are mostly young turtles weighing about 50 grams. Young turtles can usually be raised in glass tanks, arranged in a water-land style, with 2/3 of the tank area as water and 1/3 as land, which can be paved with pebbles or rockery stones; or a long strip of glass can be used to divide the 1/3 area of the tank and covered with sand and planted with grass.

Sex identification: There is no significant difference between males and females in appearance color, but there is a big difference in weight. Sex identification can be done when females weigh 1000 grams and males weigh 250 grams. Females weigh up to 1000 to 2000 grams, with a flat plastron and a cloaca opening inside the rear edge of the carapace; males weigh no more than 500 grams, with longer claws on their limbs and a longer tail, and the cloaca opening is located in the tail outside the rear edge of the carapace. Females have a wide body, a short tail, and a cloaca opening close to the base of the tail; males have a narrow and long body, a long and thick tail, a cloaca opening far from the base of the tail, and long claws.

Although red-eared sliders are omnivorous, they prefer animal baits. Under artificial breeding conditions, they mainly feed on animal viscera, maggots, and mealworms such as poultry and pigs. Properly match fruits, vegetables, and mixed feed to enhance the nutrients in their bodies. Add vitamin E powder and antibiotics in spring and autumn to increase the number of eggs carried by the turtles and enhance their physical fitness. Daily feeding should be done at regular times, fixed locations, and with fixed quality.

The time for regular feeding is fixed, generally 10:00-14:00 in spring and autumn, and 7:00-9:00 or 18:00-19:00 in summer. When the temperature is too high or too low, turtles will eat less or not eat at all.

No, the Brazilian red ear fish does not swim. When the oxygen level in the water is very low, this fish will solve the problem of lack of oxygen by floating on the water surface and eating small insects that it can prey on in the water.
