CATDOLL: How to build a scorpion breeding farm

Scorpions can be raised outdoors or indoors depending on the different conditions in different places.

1. Selection of breeding sites

(1) Site: The site should be leeward and sunny. Generally, it should be on the sunny side of the southern slope of the mountain. At the same time, it should avoid the wind outlet. It is forbidden to build the site at the mountain pass facing the wind.

(2) Environmental conditions: Usually, a terraced field or a relatively flat mountain field should be selected. The surrounding trees should be 10 meters away from the site to avoid shade or tree roots that affect the construction of the scorpion nest. The maximum slope of the mountain field should not exceed 40 degrees.

(3) Soil quality: The soil quality of the site should be loam or sandy loam to meet the scorpion's requirements for temperature and humidity. The soil should be neutral, slightly acidic or slightly alkaline.

(4) Terrain: The site should not be in a low-lying area and should be able to drain stagnant water smoothly to avoid flooding of scorpion nests, which would affect the normal growth and development of scorpions.

(5) Natural enemies: When selecting a location, special attention should be paid to avoiding the scorpion’s natural enemies, such as ants, mice, and snakes.

2. Site improvement After the site is selected, it is necessary to improve it so that it meets the specific standards for site construction.

(1) Fine tillage: Plough the mountain field to a depth of about 30 centimeters to make it into terraces, and make the soil fine and even.

(2) Clearing the site: Clear away large and small stones, weeds and their roots to avoid affecting the scorpion's nest building or causing weeds to reoccur in the next year, affecting the normal light, temperature and humidity conditions of the scorpion farm.

3. Zoning and Layout Generally, when the area of a mountain field exceeds 10 meters by 10 meters, it should be zoned. The purpose of zoning is to divide the large field into small fields, so as to facilitate the construction of drainage and irrigation channels and the layout of scorpion nests according to the districts.

(1) Size of the plot: The plot is generally 20 to 50 square meters. The specifications are 10 meters x 5 meters, 10 meters x 3 meters, 6 meters x 5 meters, 5 meters x 5 meters, etc.

(2) Layout:

① If the scorpion farm is square, the layout is simple, easy, neat and beautiful, and the rectangular plots are arranged in sequence. There should be roads between the rows, and there should be drainage ditches beside the road. The road specification is about 1 meter wide, and the plots in the row are directly connected.

⑨If the scorpion field is triangular or trapezoidal, the community can be laid out in the shape of a “品”.

⑦ If the venue is irregular in shape, it depends on the situation. Try to make it neat, concise, centralized and reasonable.

4. After the rough planning of the breeding farm is completed, the construction of the scorpion nest and the supporting facilities will be started. For a formal scorpion farm, the construction of the scorpion nest and the internal design of the community are very standard, and each community is self-contained.

(1) Scorpion nest: This is an artificially constructed scorpion habitat and breeding site, formed by installing three partitions made of cement in the soil layer of the community. The partitions are square. 25 cm x 25 cm. 2-3 cm thick. A square hole with a side length of 8-9 cm is left in the middle of each board. For the scorpion to crawl up and down. There are 16 compartments around the square hole for the scorpion to live in. When installing, first dig a 30 cm x 30 cm square hole-shaped deep pit. The depth is 30 cm. Then place a partition with the compartment groove facing up at the bottom of the pit. Tamp the soil exposed in the middle square hole on the board. After installation, fill the soil. Pay attention to leaving an upward passage at the middle square hole. After filling the 20 cm thick soil layer, install the second layer of partitions. Continue to fill the soil. First cover the surface with a cement food plate (with a small passage in the middle) for feeding. Then place the last partition and fill it tightly with soil. Cover it with a cement cover (or cement mortar), and place a bottomless glass bottle on the top for the scorpion. At this point, the scorpion nest has been built: the scorpion nests are arranged in rows in the plot, with the row and nest distance maintained at about 15 cm. A walkway is set up every 4 to 5 rows in the vertical row for easy management. In addition, the outermost scorpion nest should be more than 20 cm from the edge of the plot. The entire plot should be flat and solid before installing the scorpion nest.

(2) Enclosed line: On the boundary line of the Xiaoxiaodengli area, use glass plates or plastic films to enclose it. The above-ground part of the enclosed line should be 15 cm higher and buried about 5 cm underground. The joints should be overlapped and tightly locked. The film should be stretched straight with a bracket and compacted with soil underneath. The enclosed line is very important for preventing scorpions from escaping, defending against natural enemies, and rain erosion.

(3) Drainage outlet: When constructing a community, the community is slightly inclined to one side to facilitate drainage. A water accumulation pit is dug on the lower side of the community and a drainage outlet is set. There can be one or more drainage outlets. The drainage outlet should be a certain distance away from the closed line of the community to avoid destroying its closedness.

(4) Separation slide: This is a protective device specially used to separate large and small scorpions and prevent large scorpions from killing small scorpions. A square pit is dug at a corner of the closed line. The pit is surrounded by glass (about 5 cm above the ground), but an opening is left. A kerosene lampshade or glass bottle is placed in the opening. Small scorpions can climb onto the glass cover, and then naturally slide down into the pit after reaching the top, thus separating large and small scorpions.

5. Construction of supporting facilities for breeding farms

(1) Feed insect breeding room (area): A formal scorpion farm should have its own feed breeding room (area). The feed breeding room or breeding area should be built near the scorpion farm, and the breeding room should be built according to the living habits of various feed insects for mass breeding.

(2) Management personnel work and rest room: including offices, technical rooms, quarantine rooms, tool rooms, etc. Rest rooms include general rest rooms and dormitories, etc.

(3) Scorpion processing room: The processing room should be equipped with a sink, a cooking pot, a stove and various necessary containers and machinery to facilitate the whole scorpion processing and venom extraction of a large number of adult scorpions.

(4) Other supporting facilities: including water heating facilities, power supply systems, living facilities for staff and all necessary equipment that a large scorpion farm should be equipped with.
