CATDOLL: A jellyfish is dying after a water change. How to rescue it?

1. How to rescue a jellyfish that is dying after a water change?

The appearance of stringy mucus is a reflection of environmental discomfort. I think it should be a problem with salinity. The salinity adapted to jellyfish larvae is 14-30 (Gu Li et al., 2005. Effects of pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen on the growth of jellyfish larvae. Journal of Dalian Fisheries College, 20: 41-44.). A 500 ml bottle of mineral water is calculated as 500 g. The required salt (preferably coarse salt) is 7-15 g. I don’t know how much a bottle cap of salt weighs. You can weigh it yourself. Moreover, jellyfish need live bait, such as Artemia spp. Biscuit crumbs will only damage the water quality.

2. Are jellyfish poisonous? Why are jellyfish poisonous?

Not all jellyfish are poisonous. The poisonous jellyfish include box jellyfish, flamingo jellyfish, and flower hat jellyfish. The most terrifying of them is the box jellyfish, which is also the only jellyfish that preys with its eyes.

3. Why are jellyfish deadly?

The thorns on his tentacles have an anesthetic effect and are poisonous. In deep water you can't feel what you are doing, which means you are anesthetized. How do you say you were killed?

4. Why do jellyfish die when they encounter fresh water just like weathered rocks?

You are talking about jellyfish in the ocean. Because the salinity in the ocean is different from the physical and chemical environment in fresh water, the physiological characteristics of jellyfish in the ocean are also adapted to it, such as having the same osmotic pressure as seawater.

When jellyfish from the sea enter fresh water, the osmotic pressure of the outside world is greatly reduced, and the jellyfish's tissues will rupture, leading to the death of the jellyfish.

In fact, there are freshwater jellyfish that can live freely in freshwater, the most famous of which is the peach blossom jellyfish.

5. What happens if you get stung by a jellyfish?

Jellyfish appeared earlier than dinosaurs, dating back 650 million years. At present, there are about 200 species of jellyfish discovered in the world, and about 8 species are common in my country, namely, moon jellyfish, white jellyfish, jellyfish, crown jellyfish, etc. There are tentacles under the umbrella of jellyfish, on which there are dense stinging filaments sacs containing venom. When people and skin touch the tentacles of jellyfish, the coiled tubular stinging wires in its sac will pop out, pierce the human skin and inject venom, causing allergic reactions in the human body. After being stung by a jellyfish, people's reactions vary greatly due to different types of jellyfish and personal sensitivity. Most people immediately feel electric shock-like tingling, numbness, itching and burning sensations, but they are not very serious. After several hours to 112 hours, linear erythema, papules, and even ecchymosis and blisters will appear locally. Some serious cases may be accompanied by systemic symptoms, such as fatigue, muscle pain, chest tightness and shortness of breath, rapid breathing, palpitations, low fever, thirst, cold sweats, etc. A very small number of people who are sensitive to toxins may experience heart palpitations, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, irritability, decreased blood pressure, coughing up bloody foamy sputum, etc. If rescue is not timely, they may even die from pulmonary edema or anaphylactic shock.

Jellyfish venom can cause varying degrees of damage after stinging the human body. For example, the stinging threads of sea wasp jellyfish can secrete cobra-like venom, which is the most harmful to humans and can cause death within 5 minutes after the sting. After the Portuguese man-of-war stings the human body, the patient will take many days to eliminate the pain. Sand jellyfish floating in the Yellow Sea with the cold current are common along the coast of my country. They can secrete peptide poison. Yellow-spotted jellyfish are mainly distributed in the coastal areas of Guangdong and Guangxi and are somewhat toxic. True jellyfish can be found in the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and Bohai Sea, and are less toxic. In addition, there are face stings, rosy jellyfish, etc., and blue jellyfish are usually more toxic.

What should you do if you are stung by a jellyfish?

Once stung by a jellyfish, do not rinse with fresh water, as fresh water can cause the stinging cells to release venom. Use a towel, clothes, or sand to wipe off the tentacles or venom adhering to the skin as soon as possible, or rinse with sea water. In addition, you should also do the following:

(1) Alkaline solution can be applied topically to neutralize the jellyfish toxin. It is best to apply a cold compress to the affected area with 1% ammonia solution, or with 10% sodium bicarbonate solution or alum water.

(2) If you have systemic symptoms, you should go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible. Before leaving, you can take oral anti-allergic drugs (such as 25 mg of phenergan, 4 mg of chlorpheniramine, or 1 tablet of astemizole). If conditions permit, you can slowly inject 10 ml of 10% calcium gluconate solution intravenously.

(3) If breathing difficulties and coughing up bloody foamy sputum occur, it indicates a critical situation. The patient should be placed in a semi-recumbent or sitting position with both feet hanging down. Mouth and nose secretions should be cleared to keep the airway open. Oxygen should be given if conditions permit, and 20 to 40 mg of furosemide should be injected intramuscularly. While treating the symptoms, ask the doctor to come to the rescue as soon as possible.

6. Will jellyfish cause poisoning? What are the symptoms of poisoning?

Will jellyfish cause poisoning? What are the symptoms after poisoning?

Jellyfish, invertebrate, jellyfish-like individuals of the phylum Cnidaria. It looks like an umbrella, with many tentacles on the edge of the umbrella, and the mouth is located in the center below. Some have long mouth tubes or long mouth arms. It can be divided into two categories: small hydromedusae and large scyphozoa. Jellyfish, also called sea jellyfish, is a very low-level multicellular animal belonging to the phylum Cnidaria.

Jellyfish, moon jellyfish, crown jellyfish (also known as sand jellyfish, inverted cow), white jellyfish, Portuguese man-of-war, four-leaf jellyfish, etc. are poisonous jellyfish. Box jellyfish is the most poisonous jellyfish in the world. Box jellyfish is commonly known as sea wasp, scientific name Chironex fleckeri, English name Australian box jellyfish. It mainly lives in the northeastern coastal areas of Australia and often floats in the shallow waters along the coast of Queensland.

After being stung by a jellyfish, the general symptoms are itchy, burning and painful skin; in severe cases, loss of consciousness. If the poisoning is serious, the symptoms should be: headache, chest tightness, shortness of breath, redness, swelling, bumps, fever, dizziness, and coma at the bite site. You should go to the hospital immediately.

If you are stung by a jellyfish in the water, don't panic, and get out of the water immediately, because jellyfish swim in groups. If you continue to stay in the water, you may be stung further. First, remove the jellyfish or its tentacles attached to the skin, and then rinse the local wound with a 1:2000 potassium permanganate solution, which usually relieves the symptoms. If the patient has symptoms of shock, anti-shock treatment should be given first, and then the patient should be sent to the hospital immediately.

Dermatitis caused by jellyfish stinging cells is related to factors such as the type of jellyfish, the toxicity of the venom, the concentration, the length of contact time, the penetrating power of the stinging cells, and the size of the contact area. The symptoms it causes may include pain, severe itching, local linear papular rashes, accompanied by flushing and edema, and in severe cases, blisters, bleeding, necrosis, and ulcerative changes. Sometimes, urticaria-like rashes may also occur. If contact is made around the eye sockets or conjunctiva, it will cause conjunctivitis, eyelid edema, etc. In addition, severe allergic reactions including laryngeal edema and angioedema may also occur. Shock may occur in extremely sensitive patients, and there have been reports of fatalities. Chronic skin manifestations include lichenified rashes caused by frequent scratching, paresthesias, local hyperhidrosis, and lymphadenopathy.
