CATDOLL: What shape is a honeycomb?

1. What is the shape of a honeycomb?

A single honeycomb is a regular hexagon

The overall shape of the honeycomb is limited by the container, and it is lantern-shaped when hanging naturally. The honeycomb of bees is the most typical. The honeycombs in tree holes and cliff crevices are irregular.

For artificially raised bees, the honeycombs are fixed on the honeycombs (rectangular frames) and arranged at certain intervals in the rectangular beehive.

2. What is a beehive?

Bees are the greatest architects in nature. Their hives are made up of hexagonal cells.

The exquisite skills of bees in building nests are amazing. They use the least building materials and occupy the smallest area to build large and solid honeycombs. The honeycomb of bees is a sheet of wax secreted by young worker bees, also called honeycomb. The vertical distribution of small hexagonal eyes is called nest cells. Nest cells are where bees lay eggs, breed larvae, and store food such as honey and pollen. Every time a bee raises its offspring in a nest cell, when its larvae are about to pupate, they will spin silk in the nest cell to make a thin cocoon to protect themselves. When the pupa emerges from the nest, this layer of cocoon will remain in the nest cell. As the number of times bees raise their offspring increases, the cocoon in the nest cell also increases, the size of the cell eyes becomes smaller and smaller, and the color of the entire honeycomb becomes darker and darker, even turning into brown. At this time, the individual bees raised become smaller and smaller. For bees, the queen bee does not like to lay eggs in this kind of nest cell. Beekeepers call this kind of honeycomb old honeycomb. Since old honeycombs are not good for bee breeding, beekeepers take them out of the hive and replace them with new honeycomb foundations (artificial wax sheets made of beeswax, specially used as the foundation for bees to build nests) so that the bees can rebuild their nests. This old honeycomb taken out of the hive is also a bee product with pharmacological effects.

3. What is a beehive?

Answer: 1. The connotation of honeycomb

The beehive is where the bee colony lives and reproduces, and is made up of combs. The combs are suspended parallel to each other in the space inside the beehive and perpendicular to the ground. The distance between the combs is 7 to 10 mm, which is called the bee path. Each comb is composed of thousands of cells connected together, and is built by worker bees using the wax secreted by their own wax glands.

2. Types of Beehives

There are many types of bees, and the shapes of beehives are also varied. They can be roughly divided into three categories based on their shapes:

1. Honey Page

Bees are generally domesticated, and their nests are built in artificial beehives (wooden boxes). The largest form is a block hanging on the top of the beehive. Beekeepers call it honey leaves. The honey leaves are removed and processed into honey or other honey products, such as royal jelly.

2. Lotus pose

Small groups of bees usually build their hives on the lower parts of eaves, window sills, stone steps, etc., with as few as 3-5 cells and as many as dozens. Large groups of bees build their nests on tree branches, which can be up to 50 cm in diameter, with hundreds of cells and a shape like an inverted lotus pod. Some people describe this kind of hive as "an upside-down house with bees hidden and poisonous, which will disappear in autumn, and is a beehive."

3. Crypt

Some bees build their nests in the soil. The ones we usually see are single-chamber structures. There are also underground hives built by bee colonies, but they are rarely seen, so it is impossible to describe their specific form.

A beehive should be a nest built by bees. It is a place where bees live and reproduce, and is composed of combs. Each comb is suspended parallel to each other in the space inside the beehive and perpendicular to the ground. The distance between the combs is 7 to 10 mm, which is called a bee path. Each comb is composed of thousands of cells connected together, and is built by worker bees using the beeswax secreted by their own wax glands. The beehive is a necessary "furniture" and "food room" for the bee's home. Beekeepers will dismantle the entire beehive to obtain honey. Honey can be extracted by opening the beehive, taking out the comb board, and then putting it into a centrifuge to separate honey.
