Why are red spiders not spiders?

The reason why people mistake red spiders for spiders is that they look like spiders, their nymphs and adults also have four pairs of legs, and they are one of the few mites that can spin silk, so they are named red spiders and have been passed down to this day. With the development of acarology in my country, we understand that red spiders are not spiders but spider mites. Therefore, the scientific name of the cotton red spider that harms cotton should be red spider mites.

On the back of cotton leaves, you can often see some dark red, spider-like small "bugs" crawling. These are what people often call red spiders.

Although red spider is called spider, it is not a true spider, but belongs to the acarina family, called spider mite.

What is the difference between red spiders and spiders? To understand this, we must first understand the difference between spiders and ticks.

From the morphological point of view, the spider's body is divided into two parts: the cephalothorax and the abdomen, which are connected by a thin abdominal stalk in the middle; while the head, thorax and abdomen of the tick mite are connected to form a body, without a thin abdominal stalk in between. The protruding part in the front of the body is called the maxilla, which is the mouthpart. From the development point of view, spiders are ametamorphotic, and their spiderlings, sub-adults and adults all have four pairs of legs; while tick mites are metamorphotic, and their spiderlings have three pairs of legs, while nymphs and adults have four pairs of legs. From the perspective of living habits, spiders are carnivorous and have poison glands in their bodies; while tick mites have a variety of habits, including carnivorous, herbivorous, fungivorous, saprophagous and parasitic, and have no poison glands in their bodies. Due to these differences, zoologists classify spiders as Arachnida, subclass Arachnida, and tick mites as Arachnida, subclass Acari.

The body of the red spider is divided only into the maxilla and the body. Although its nymphs and adult mites have four pairs of legs, the young mites only have three pairs of legs, and it is herbivorous, so the red spider is not a spider, but a tick mite.

The reason why people mistake red spiders for spiders is that they look like spiders, and their nymphs and adults also have four pairs of legs. They are also one of the few mites that can spin silk. In addition, before liberation, there was no research on acari in my country, and little was known about mites, so the name red spider was given and has been passed down to this day. After liberation, with the development of acari research in my country, we understand that red spiders are not spiders but spider mites. Therefore, the scientific name of the cotton red spider that harms cotton should be red spider mites.
