CATDOLL: What are the winter pests and diseases of spider orchid?

1. What are the diseases and pests of spider orchid in winter?

The main diseases are leaf spot and leaf scorch. If a small amount is found, remove the diseased leaves and destroy them. If the disease is serious, spray 75% mancozeb wettable powder at a dilution of 500 times for prevention and control.

2. How do orchids reproduce?

Orchid propagation is divided into division and sowing:

Division: It can be done in spring and autumn, once every three years. All plants with strong growth and dense pseudobulbs can be divided. After division, at least 5 pseudobulbs connected together should be preserved in each clump. Before division, reduce irrigation and keep the pot soil dry.

The planting depth should be enough to just bury the pseudobulbs in the soil, leaving a 2cm edge on the edge of the pot, and cover it with green cloud grass or fine stones. Finally, water it thoroughly and place it in a shade for 10-15 days, keeping the soil moist, gradually reduce watering, and carry out normal maintenance.

Sowing: Orchids are usually propagated by division, sowing and tissue culture. Orchid seeds are very small, with only an underdeveloped embryo inside, and low germination ability. In addition, the seed coat is not easy to absorb water, so orchid bacteria or artificial culture medium are needed to supply nutrients for germination.

Living habits

Most orchids are semi-shade plants, afraid of direct sunlight, and need appropriate shade. In early and mid-April, orchids can be exposed to more sunlight to promote their growth. After late April, they need appropriate shade.

The upright-leaf varieties of summer orchids and autumn orchids are best placed on the south side of a shaded place so that they can receive more sunlight; for the drooping-leaf autumn orchids and spring orchids, it is best to receive two hours of sunlight a day.

From June to September, shade should be provided early every day. If reed curtains are used, dense curtains or two layers of sparse curtains can be used. After October, the weather turns cooler and the sunlight is weaker, so shade can be postponed, but shade should still be provided around noon.
