Can farmed locusts damage plastic greenhouses?

Although current laws and regulations do not explicitly prohibit locust breeding, there are great risks in breeding locusts. This is mainly a public safety issue. As for whether locusts can bite the plastic shed, it is best to do a small experiment. Locusts have powerful mouthparts, and hungry locusts are more difficult to control. It is recommended to consult relevant legal and entomological experts.

How do you raise locusts? Can it be done in all four seasons?

1. Selection and identification of locust seed sources for breeding Methods for determining locust species include: ⑴ Consult locust classification experts. ⑵ Consult locust retrieval tables or atlases. ⑶ Consult experienced locust breeders. ⑷ Send locust species to customers for identification and review. Common types of breeding locusts include: East Asian migratory locust, cotton locust, Chinese rice locust, Chinese grasshopper, etc. These varieties have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as their growth cycle, generation, taste, food, size, and varieties required by customers, and select breeding varieties in combination with local climate, food sources, etc. 2. Construction of locust breeding sheds The area of the shed depends on the number of locusts. Generally, about 300 adults can be raised per square meter. To breed migratory locusts under natural conditions, the construction of the shed must be completed before the end of April, because the eggs of northern locusts can generally hatch in May. 3. Management during the nymph stage ⑴ Locust nymphs eat very little and like to eat fresh and tender plants. Locusts are very fragile during this period, and attention should be paid to rain protection to prevent the locust nymphs from drowning. ⑵The temperature should be controlled at 25-30℃, the light should be above 12 hours, and the humidity should be kept at about 15%. Under these conditions, locusts are most active, like to eat, and are conducive to growth. ⑶The food intake of locust nymphs above the third instar gradually increases. At this time, it is necessary to ensure that there is sufficient food in the greenhouse, otherwise it will affect their normal growth and they will kill each other. 4. Keep the greenhouse clean and clean it once every 1-2 days to prevent diseases. (Cao Chengquan, College of Plant Protection, Shandong Agricultural University, Tai'an 271018)
