CATDOLL: Are centipedes mostly active at night?

1. Do centipedes mostly come out at night?

It stays in its nest during the day and comes out to move around at night.

The peak activity period for centipedes is from 8 to 12 o'clock in the evening. They usually return to their nests to rest before 4 o'clock in the morning. It is difficult to see centipedes after daybreak.

During the day, the centipede has poor eyesight and cannot see clearly things that are slightly far away, making it difficult for it to find food and defend against enemies. It can only rely on a pair of slender tentacles extending forward to find its way, and also rely on its tentacles to search for prey and find food at night.

5. Centipedes have the habit of licking. They often lick their antennae and legs with the dense hairs on the protrusion of the first maxilla and the base of the maxilla, the brush-like bristles on the back of the second maxilla, and the saliva from their mouths. They also lick their own nests clean. 6. Temperature: Centipedes are cold-blooded animals, and all their activities are often related to temperature.

The optimum temperature for centipede growth and development is 25℃ ~ 32℃. When the temperature is 11℃ ~ 15℃, the centipede's foraging will decrease and it will stop mating and laying eggs.

When the temperature drops below 10℃, the centipede stops all activities, burrows into the loose soil (or nest in the soil), curls up and hibernates. However, when the temperature rises to 33℃~35℃, all its activities are suspended due to the loss of water in the body.

If the temperature rises above 36℃, the body will lose too much water, causing the body to dry up and die.

7. Humidity: When the relative humidity of the air is 60% to 70% and the humidity of the nest soil is 10% to 20%, all the life activities of the centipede are most active. That is to say, this is the most suitable humidity for the growth and development of the centipede. The natural enemies of the centipede are mice, skinks, toads, ants, chickens and birds.

Centipedes are slow when hatching and molting, and can be easily taken advantage of by ants. They can be bitten to death and eaten in just a few hours, so it is necessary to prevent and control ants in advance.

2 How to deal with it? So, keeping it dry is the most important thing. Other things like realgar can also drive away centipedes. Centipedes belong to the class Myriapoda. The first pair of legs are hooked and sharp. There are poison gland openings at the hook ends, generally called palatine teeth, tooth claws or poison limbs, which can excrete venom. After being bitten by a centipede, its poison glands secrete a large amount of venom, which is injected into the subcutaneous tissue of the bitten person along the poison gland openings of the palatine teeth and causes poisoning.

2. When are the most centipedes found in a year?

Early March to October.

Centipedes are afraid of sunlight and hide during the day and come out at night. They like to live in dark, warm, rain-proof and well-ventilated places. Centipedes like to live in hilly areas and sandy areas. During the day, they hide in the gaps between bricks and stones, at the foot of the wall, and in dark corners of piles of leaves, weeds and rotten wood. They come out at night to look for caterpillars, spiders, cockroaches, etc.

Generally, when the weather turns cold in October, they burrow into the soil on the leeward and sunny slopes and hibernate in the soil about 12 cm deep from the ground until after the Waking of Insects of the following year (early March). As the weather warms up, they begin to move around and look for food again.

Centipedes come out more often in July. At normal temperature, centipedes have a hibernation period and an activity period. Generally, they end their hibernation and begin to reproduce after the Qingming Festival in April of the Gregorian calendar. This period to June of the Gregorian calendar is also the golden period for introducing species for breeding.

It enters hibernation around mid-November of the Gregorian calendar. The length of the hibernation period varies depending on the climate in different places. Centipedes reproduce once a year, starting to lay eggs in late June of the Gregorian calendar, with the most eggs in early July. After laying eggs, it takes about 45 days to hatch before the baby centipedes leave the mother's body and move alone. The body length of the baby centipedes can reach about 5 cm that year.

3. How long does it take for a centipede to grow up?

The normal cycle for centipedes growing in the wild is 2 to 3 years to grow from larvae to adults (over 12 cm).

Centipedes are artificially raised in outdoor greenhouses, 1.5 to 2 years old.

Artificial indoor tile culture, more than 1 year,

Artificial indoor soilless three-dimensional cultivation, 8 to 12 months.

The 3 to 5 cm long seedlings can become commercial insects from April to June.

Centipedes have a hibernation period and an activity period. Generally, they end their hibernation after the Qingming Festival in April and begin to live and reproduce. This period to June is also the golden period for introducing species for breeding. They enter the hibernation period around mid-November of the solar calendar. The length of the hibernation period varies according to the climate in different places. Centipedes reproduce once a year, starting to lay eggs in late June of the solar calendar, with the largest number in early July. After laying eggs, it takes about 45 days for the young centipedes to hatch before they leave the mother body and move alone. The body length of the young centipedes can reach about 5 cm in the same year.

4. How old is the 15cm long centipede?

Wild centipedes grow slowly because they hibernate for half a year and lack food. They grow to 3-4 cm from the time they hatch from eggs to the time they hibernate. In the second year, before they come out of hibernation, they have plenty of food, but they only grow to 3.5-6 cm. In the third year, they grow to more than 10 cm. Therefore, it takes about 3 years for a centipede to grow from an egg to 15 cm.

5. Why do centipedes often come out in summer?

The rainy season in summer is hot and humid, which is their active season. In the dry and cold seasons, they will burrow into the soil to hibernate. Homes are also shady and dry, so they instinctively like to burrow into such places.

In summer, they only grow in overgrown areas. When we travel, we must not go to those places easily. This is especially true when we take pets out to play, as they will bring back insects on their fur. If you have traveled, it is best to wash your clothes thoroughly and dry them in the sun. It is also better to wash your pets thoroughly and check them carefully. If it is indeed due to the environment at home, please check the green plants carefully and dispose of the problematic green plants. If it is the surrounding environment, you must first weed and then apply some pesticides.

Centipedes are also hibernating animals. When the weather gets hot in the summer, they will naturally come out to eat. They go to dark and humid environments, such as sewers or drains, and there may be more centipedes in basements.

If it is a relatively dry or sunny place, it will generally not appear, and there will be many centipedes in places where there are too many lawns or things.

6. How many times do centipedes reproduce in a year and how big can they grow in a year?

once.

At normal temperature, centipedes have a hibernation period and an activity period. Generally, they end hibernation after the Qingming Festival in April and begin to live and reproduce. This period to June is also the golden period for introducing species for breeding. They enter hibernation around mid-November of the solar calendar. The body length of the young centipedes can reach about 5 cm in the same year. Around July of the following year, centipedes can grow to six to seven centimeters.

Artificially cultivated centipedes can reproduce once a year. If they are raised, it will take one year at constant temperature and two to three years at room temperature.
