CATDOLL: Is the loach a fish? What level of protection is the plateau loach?

1. Is loach a fish?

Loach is actually a fish

From the appearance, loach is very different from fish, but loach is also a kind of fish, swimming around in the water, and its body is very flexible. Loach is very long, about three inches long, and the whole body is round, like a cylinder, and it feels very smooth. There are some delicate small scales under the skin of loach, which most people don't observe.

Because loaches have a lot of mucus on their bodies, they are slippery all over, so it is difficult to catch them with your hands. It is best to use a large net to catch them. The loach's body is mainly blue-black, which doesn't look very pleasing, but it tastes very good. For example, a famous dish in the north is "loach stewed in sauce", which tastes very delicious. Loach belongs to the family Loachidae, but it is definitely a type of fish.

The stone loach is often called knife loach, knife loach, stone cone, thorn loach or knife cut by the people. This is because this fish looks very much like loach, but it is a more dangerous fish than loach. Because it has its own "weapon".

Because the steel loach has very high requirements for water quality, this fish can only survive in running water and waters that are not polluted. Once the water is polluted, it basically cannot survive. In addition, many people have been overfishing in the past few years, using unscientific fishing methods, especially the serious situation of electrofishing, which has led to the disappearance of steel loach in many places.

4. Is the long thin loach a protected fish?

By 2009, the wild resources of the long thin loach were decreasing year by year. In 2010, the long thin loach was listed as "Vulnerable (VU)" in the "Red List of Endangered Species of the World Conservation Union (IUCN)"; in 2021, the wild population of the long thin loach was listed as a national second-class protected wild animal in the "National Key Protected Wildlife List" of China. [11][12] The long thin loach has bright spots on both sides of its body, which is ornamental; it is rich in crude protein, crude fat, and amino acids, and has edible value, but it is a wild protected animal and can only be eaten if it is artificially cultivated.

6. What level of protected fish is the mackerel

Answer: Currently, there is no protection level for the black carp. Although the black carp is not a major economic fish, it plays an important indicator role in biodiversity conservation and ecosystems.

We should pay attention to the discovery and protection of individuals with rare genes. On the one hand, we should implement special reproductive protection to prevent the loss of genotypes caused by random drift; on the other hand, we should incorporate them into the breeding population so that the rare genes they carry can be amplified in the population. In the artificial amplification and breeding activities of the black carp, we should try to avoid inbreeding and expand gene exchange. Inbreeding will inevitably lead to the lack of genetic diversity in the black carp population.

7. What is the national level of protection for the catfish-like plateau loach?

There are about 140 species of freshwater fish in the Yellow River, of which only 16 are distributed in the upper reaches and 15 in the Sichuan section. Among them, four species, including bony-lipped yellow river fish (large-mouthed yellow croaker, yellow river fish), flat pharyngeal tooth fish, Yellow River plateau loach, and pseudo-catfish plateau loach (grassland catfish), are provincial key protected fish.

First, the protection policy. Aba, Ruoergai and Hongyuan counties carried out aquatic wildlife protection publicity and special law enforcement actions in the Baihe and Heihe sections of the upper reaches of the Yellow River within their counties.
