How to raise golden coin turtle?

1. Feeding: Generally, breeding turtles should be fed once every 1-3 days. The specific feeding frequency is determined by the physiological needs of the breeding turtles and the climate conditions. The general principle is "more in summer, less in autumn, and none in winter and spring" (the four seasons here are divided according to folk customs, that is, January to March of the lunar calendar is spring, April to June is summer, July to September is autumn, and October to December is winter): (i) More in summer. In summer, the temperature is high, breeding turtles are active and have a strong appetite, so they should be fed more frequently. They can be fed once every 1-2 days, and the feeding time is generally in the evening every day (5-7 pm). Adequate food supply during this period can meet the nutritional needs of breeding turtles, which is very important for ensuring the egg production and fertilization rate of breeding turtles. (ii) Less in autumn. In autumn, the temperature gradually drops, the activities of the breeding turtles gradually decrease, and their appetite also decreases accordingly. The number of feedings should be reduced accordingly. They can be fed once every 2-3 days, but the nutritional combination should be reasonable. Try to feed them more nutritious food to strengthen their physical fitness, reserve energy, and prepare for winter. (III) None in winter and spring. In winter and spring, the temperature is low, and the breeding turtles rarely move or do not move at all, and enter hibernation, so there is no need to feed them food. 2. Changing water: Breeding turtles generally change water every 2-5 days. The specific number of water changes is related to the number of times they are fed and the form of the food they are fed. If the number of times they are fed is high, or the form of the food they are fed is meat paste that is easy to rot and deteriorate, the number of water changes should be increased accordingly. 3. Disinfection: Breeding turtles generally need to be disinfected once every 20-30 days. The specific number of disinfections is related to the water quality. If the water quality is good, the number of disinfections will be reduced accordingly; if the water quality is poor, the number of disinfections will be increased accordingly. 4. Hatching: The egg-laying period of breeding turtles is from April to June of the lunar calendar every year. The turtle eggs produced can be hatched into turtle seedlings after artificial incubation (for specific incubation techniques, please refer to the "Turtle Egg Hatching Technology" on this website).

What does the golden coin turtle eat? What is the growth environment like? How to raise it?

1. Preparation and disinfection of breeding ponds

After breeding golden coin turtles, place some shelters irregularly in the pond to simulate the natural environment in the wild, so that the golden coin turtles can grow in a quiet and comfortable state. Before releasing golden coin turtles, thoroughly disinfect the breeding pond with a bleaching powder aqueous solution with a concentration of 100mg/L for 12 hours, then drain the liquid medicine out of the pond, and rinse the residual liquid medicine in the breeding pond with clean water. Water quality management. Golden coin turtles like to live in water, and the quality of water directly affects the health of turtles. Generally, unpolluted well water, river water, and lake water can be used. If tap water is used, the pH value of the water should be tested first. It is best to use water that has been exposed to the sun to remove chlorine. For turtles raised in ponds, the water color should be light green and the transparency should be 25 to 30 cm. If the water color is blue-green, it means that the water is too fertile and lacks oxygen, and the water should be changed in time. Whether it is pond breeding or cement pool breeding, the number of water changes and the amount of water changed each time during the breeding process should depend on the water quality, water color and seasonal changes.

2. Feed selection and feeding

The feed for raising golden coin turtles is divided into two categories: animal feed and plant feed. Animal feed includes lean pork, animal offal, fish, shrimp, shellfish, etc. Plant feed includes banana (peeled) and apple, etc. Animal feed is mainly used, and the two types of feed are used interchangeably. The number of times plant feed is fed is about 1/7 of the number of times animal feed is fed. From the observation of the eating situation of golden coin turtles, it can be seen that golden coin turtles like to eat lean pork from animal feed and bananas from plant feed the most. The feed should be chopped when feeding. In the process of feeding, the quality, quantity, timing and location should be fixed. It is better to discard the contaminated bait than to feed it, otherwise it will lose more than the small. The feeding time varies according to the season. In summer, it is fed at 10-11 am every day, and in autumn, it can be fed at 3-4 pm. The daily feeding amount accounts for 1% of the weight of the golden coin turtle. It should be adjusted at any time according to the actual eating situation. The feeding amount each time should be eaten within 1 hour after feeding. Remove the residual bait and wash the feeding table after 1.5 hours of feeding.

3. Disease prevention and treatment of golden coin turtles

In order to prevent the golden coin turtle from getting sick during the breeding process, preventive measures must be taken. The specific method is: use 10mg/L bleaching powder solution or 2% salt water to wash and bathe the turtle body for 5-10 minutes every 2 weeks to prevent and treat common bacterial diseases, and use concentrated kelp extract (soak 100g of chopped dry kelp in 10ml of water and then rinse it for 10 minutes) to soak or bathe the turtle body for 1-10 minutes to prevent and treat the occurrence of big neck disease in golden coin turtles. In particular, when the golden coin turtle's appetite decreases and its movements are slow, soaking the turtle body in concentrated kelp extract for 10 minutes can improve the golden coin turtle's appetite and has a good disease prevention effect. Feed oxytetracycline bait once a week, that is, mix oxytetracycline powder in mashed lean pork, and the dosage is calculated based on 1/5 tablet of oxytetracycline for each 100g young turtle. Place the golden coin turtle in an outdoor dry sand pool (be careful to prevent escape) to bask in the sun once a week. It is best to bask in the sun between 9:00 and 10:00 in the morning when there is plenty of sunlight. In summer and autumn, each basking lasts for 20 to 30 minutes, and in winter and spring, it lasts for 30 to 60 minutes each time.

Sunbathing the turtle's back not only has a bactericidal effect, but also creates conditions for the vitamin D source on the turtle's body surface to be converted into vitamin D, thereby enhancing the turtle's disease resistance.

4. Choice of Golden Turtle

Selecting healthy turtles is the key to successfully raising golden coin turtles. Generally, you can start from the following three aspects.

1. Age. There are two types of turtles: wild and artificially raised. Wild three-lined box turtles grow slowly and grow fast in summer. Each shield on their carapace has clear and dense concentric rings, which are called growth rings. Each ring represents one year. Female turtles weigh 1250-1500 grams, and male turtles weigh 700-1000 grams, and they are sexually mature. However, the concentric rings of artificially raised turtles are more blurred and sparse, and the distance between each ring is larger. Although some turtles weigh 2000 grams, their growth period is only 2-3 years. This is because the turtles grow fast under artificial breeding conditions. Therefore, it is best to choose wild turtles when buying turtles. Turtles purchased before laying eggs can lay eggs in the same year. If you choose artificially raised turtles, you cannot only choose the turtle's individual weight when choosing a turtle, but should mainly consider the turtle's age, and the turtle's individual weight is only a supplementary condition.

2. Physical condition. A healthy turtle has a well-proportioned appearance, a fat body, bright eyes, and a strong feeling when pulling its limbs. It has no tail breakage. The cloaca opening is small. If the cloaca opening is loose and large, it is a symptom of enteritis. The turtle's hind limbs are not missing claws, otherwise it will affect digging holes and laying eggs.

3. Female-male ratio. According to the experience of most breeders, the best ratio of female to male turtles is 2:1. If there are too many male turtles, it is easy to cause fights between male turtles during the mating season, and in serious cases, both sides will be bitten. If there are too few male turtles, the fertilization rate will be affected.

4. The head of the Hainan variety of golden coin turtle is golden yellow, while the head of the Vietnamese variety is gray. The bottom plate of the Hainan and Guangdong varieties of golden coin turtle is black, while the Vietnamese variety of golden coin turtle has a "米" character near its head.

Golden coin turtle breeding technology

Golden coin turtles grow slowly, and generally their gonads mature and they begin to mate when they are over 6 years old. When breeding artificially, you should select turtles that are over 6 years old and strong as parent turtles, and raise them in a pond with a ratio of 2 to 3:1 between male and female turtles, allowing the turtles to mate freely.

Golden coin turtles usually start mating at 17:00-18:00 in the evening of September to October when the temperature is 20-25℃. In June of the following year, when the water temperature rises to around 25℃, the female turtles start laying eggs, which last until the end of July or the beginning of August. They lay eggs 3-4 times in total, with 3-4 eggs each time.

Golden coin turtles usually lay eggs in the early morning or evening. Before laying eggs, female turtles choose shallow sand piles with soft soil or dig holes under the roots of trees and grass, then lay eggs in the holes, cover the holes with sand, and press them flat with their bodies before leaving. Under natural conditions, the hatching of golden coin turtle eggs is easily affected by external natural conditions such as climate, light, natural enemies, etc., so the incubation time is long and the hatching rate is low. When artificially bred, artificial incubation can be performed to increase the hatching rate.

Artificial incubation of eggs Fresh, high-quality eggs with strong embryonic vitality are the internal factors for achieving good incubation results, while various physical and chemical factors that meet the requirements are the external conditions. Artificial incubation is to create and maintain the external conditions as much as possible under the premise of taking the internal factors into consideration, so as to hatch as many normal-developed and strong baby turtles as possible.

The method of artificial hatching is: during the egg-laying period of the golden coin turtle, collect the golden coin turtle eggs at any time, and select fresh and non-deformed eggs for hatching. Spread the bottom of the (about 30 cm high, length and width as needed) with fine sand that can be squeezed into a ball by hand, about 20 cm thick, and then bury the selected turtle eggs one by one in the fine sand 2-3 cm deep, cover with a wet towel, and then put it in a ventilated place. Sprinkle water 1-2 times a day, requiring the humidity to be maintained at 80%, and the temperature to be maintained between 25-30℃. After 50-60 days, the baby turtles can be hatched.

Growth and reproduction of golden coin turtle

The growth temperature of the golden coin turtle is between 24-32℃. When the water temperature is 28℃, it will float to breathe once every 20 minutes in the water; when the water temperature is 25℃, it will float to breathe once every 26 minutes; when the water temperature is below 12℃, it will enter hibernation. There are two types of turtles: wild and artificially raised. Wild turtles grow slowly and grow fast in summer. Each shield on the carapace has clear and dense concentric rings, which are called growth rings. Each ring represents one year. Female turtles weigh 1250-1500 grams, and male turtles weigh 700-1000 grams. They are sexually mature. However, the concentric rings of artificially raised turtles are more blurred and sparse, and the distance between each ring is larger. Although some turtles weigh 2000 grams, their growth period is only 2-3 years. This is because the turtles grow fast under artificial breeding conditions.

Prevention and treatment of common diseases of golden coin turtle

The golden coin turtle has strong disease resistance. In artificial breeding and management, as long as the cleanliness is maintained, the golden coin turtle rarely gets sick. Rats, snakes, ants, etc. are the main natural enemies of the golden coin turtle. In breeding and management, we must strictly prevent the harm of these natural enemies.
