Breeding characteristics Silver Dragon photo collection (13 photos) Strong physique, rapid growth, large appetite. Fierce character, can swallow small fish, not suitable for mixed breeding with other fish. It is suitable to use a large aquarium, cover it and do not lay bottom sand. It likes weak acidic or neutral soft water, water temperature above 22℃, the most suitable temperature is 24-28℃. It mainly feeds on animal bait. Silver Dragon breeding characteristics Oviparous, breeding is more difficult, and it is not difficult to distinguish between male and female during the breeding period. The male fish has a long and sharp chest and is dark red, while the female fish has a swollen abdomen. Male and female naturally pair up and freely choose their mates. The breeding water temperature is preferably 27-28℃. Put the self-paired broodstock into the breeding box and keep the environment quiet. After entering the box, the broodstock swim side by side, ovulate and ejaculate while swimming. After spawning, the male fish will hold all the fertilized eggs in its mouth for incubation. It takes about 1 month for the fertilized eggs in the male fish's mouth to hatch into fry with yolk sacs, and then about 8 days to swim and eat. As long as the conditions are suitable, spawning can be done regardless of the season. It takes 5 to 6 years to reach sexual maturity, and the life span is generally 18 years. Arowana is an ancient species, also known as a "living fossil", with extremely high ornamental and academic value. Edit this section Breeding method The growth and maturation period of arowana is very long. Generally, female fish need 6-12 years, and male fish need 5-16 years to reproduce (this depends on your breeding level). Moreover, not all arowana can be bred in an aquarium, such as golden arowana. The arowana that are mainly bred in aquariums now include silver arowana, red arowana (quite difficult, there are still no successful reports in China), blue arowana, Australian arowana and other varieties. Arowana, like cichlid fish, is a mouth-brooding fish, and it is also a naturally paired fish. In nature, dragon fish will hold the eggs in their mouths to hatch when breeding. After hatching, the male fish will watch over the fry near them. When they encounter enemies or are frightened, the parent fish will hold the fry in their mouths until the danger is over. This will continue until the fry can find food on their own. Edit this section Preparation conditions before breeding In 1966, Mr. Miyata and Shiro Tagami of Japan completed the first aquarium breeding of silver dragon fish using hot spring water and reinforced concrete tanks designed by themselves. So far, the number of breedings in the breeding farms they set up in the Aso Hot Spring area is quite impressive. So how to breed silver dragon fish in an aquarium? First of all, the water body for dragon fish breeding should be wide. The better breeding box is preferably a tank of more than 2 meters, 200×90×60 or 250×100×60. Preparation of parent fish: Because dragon fish have the habit of pairing themselves, they don't like people to give them partners. So you can raise several young fish together from a young age (5-7 years) and let them pair freely. You can also place mature fish, one male and one female, on both sides of a large tank, separated by a partition. Make sure to punch holes in the partition to facilitate water circulation on both sides. The fish will adapt to the situation here. When you find that the dragon fish is in estrus, pull out the partition. At this time, they will make special tail-chasing movements, and then bite each other's fins, especially the section from the anal fin to the caudal fin. The dragon fish will jump or collide with each other when frightened, and even cause the dragon whiskers to break and bleed. Such injuries will not threaten the life of the dragon fish in a short time, so everyone should be patient. After a few days, if the two dragon fish begin to calm down, start to swim slowly, and show close proximity, it means that the pairing is successful. If they still fight fiercely, it means that the pairing is not successful. You should check whether the paired fish is not mature yet? Is there anything that should not be in the water? Then raise them separately and pair them again. How to distinguish mature male and female fish: male fish generally like to show off in front of female fish. The most important thing is that male fish have a slender body shape, long pectoral fins, and are dark red. The abdomen of the female fish appears full and swollen due to the eggs. The oviduct of the female fish is protruding during the spawning period. The vas deferens of the male fish is concave. These are all differences. Water quality management for silver dragon fish breeding: Paired dragon fish will be injured, so water quality management is extremely important in breeding. 1. Pay attention to not overfeeding the bait, and must promptly extract the residual bait. 2. If there are signs of illness, immediately carry out medicated bath treatment, and pay attention to prevent other fish from being infected. Because dragon fish are extremely sensitive to drugs, the amount of drugs should be much less than usual. We will mention this in the dragon fish's diseases. During the medicated bath, pay attention to changing the water more than usual. 3. The pH value should be maintained at 6.2-7.2 to prevent excessive acidosis, and the water temperature should be 26-28℃. When you do these, and see the intimate dragon fish couple close together, resting somewhere at the bottom of the aquarium, this is the spawning place they have chosen. Hurry up and find something to block the light. This will make it more at ease and convenient for spawning. When you see the male fish holding the eggs in his mouth, you can wait patiently for the hatching of the young fish. The female fish will guard the male fish while he is taking care of the eggs. After about 60 days, the fry will go in and out of the male fish's mouth. The male parent fish will slowly release the young fish and show great care. This will last until about 90 days. The young fish will rarely go in and out of the male parent fish's mouth. At this time, you can quietly pick up the young fish. Be patient when picking them up, because other little guys will definitely hide in the male parent fish's mouth for a long time, so you just wait slowly. The male parent fish usually holds 40 eggs, but in the end there will only be a dozen small fish. It can be seen that the breeding of dragon fish is not easy. The parent fish will stop eating before spawning, and will not eat until the young fish leave the male fish, so a spawning breeding is extremely harmful to the male fish. If the feeding before breeding is not good enough, the male fish will be unable to recover or even die, so pay attention to the feeding preparation before breeding. Experiments with artificial hatching of eggs have not yet made progress, so the male fish has to continue to work hard. New fish into the tank: When the new fish is just bought, the air pump in the fish tank should be run for at least 24 hours to completely eliminate the chlorine in the water. If you have been using a biological filter, it is best to keep the water at a pH of 6-7 and a water temperature of 25°C. Add small table salt to the fish tank (approximately 1 or 2 teaspoons added to every 5 gallons or 20 liters of water) to reduce the risk of fungal attack and keep the fish healthy and improve its appetite. If conditions permit, it is best to take water from the original tank of the new fish back to your own fish tank (if the original water is fine), and it is best to take back 1/3 of it to facilitate the new fish's adverse reaction to sudden changes in the environment. It is recommended to raise dragon fish from a young age. Daily management: Change the water at least 20%-30% per week, and the ammonia content should not exceed 0.1 parts per million (mg/1). Do not make sudden changes in temperature and pH, as sudden changes will cause sudden death of dragon fish. Test the pH value and other toxic substances every week to avoid any mishaps. Be careful when changing the water to avoid scaring the arowana. And when raising arowana, be sure to avoid completely changing the water with new water, otherwise it will cause harm to the fish. If you see the fins and scales of the arowana fall off, it is caused by changing the water too much. You can stop changing the water and they will recover naturally; but the amount of water change should not be too little, too little will make the fins opaque, the eyeballs cloudy, and serious cases will cause the gill cover to flip. Other aspects that should be paid attention to when raising silver arowanas Fish tank size: Because arowanas are large fish, the fish tank should be at least 1.5 meters long, 0.5 meters wide, and 0.7 meters high. The fish tank must be covered. Arowanas are fish that swim in the upper layer and like to jump, so as to avoid jumping out of the tank and suffocating to death when no one is around. Lighting: Red arowanas need a lot of light, and it is best to get 4 hours of light a day. Other arowanas should also get 8 hours of light. Some fish lovers, such as red fish, like to use red light to illuminate red arowanas, so as to achieve better results. The best light for dragon fish is daylight during the day. Long-term use of lights will darken the back of the dragon fish. Filtration: Dragon fish fry are too large to be kept in a water plant box. If the fish tank is large, the problem of filtration will be more prominent. The filtration systems suitable for dragon fish farming mainly include upper filters, external filters, upper + pumping sand layer filters, and overflow filters. But it should be noted that when arranging the dragon fish box, you should consider arranging a water pump (surfing pump). The benefits of doing so are great: 1. It can form a strong water flow, 2. Increase the dissolved oxygen content in the water, 3. More importantly, it can keep the dragon fish in a certain amount of exercise to maintain the beautiful body shape of the fish, 4. It is also very important to prevent the dragon fish from turning over its gills. When turning over, the gills can be trimmed. Using a water pump during the recovery period can make the growing gills smooth. Edit this section Feeding precautions Dragon fish will hit a certain angle in the tank when eating too hard, causing injuries. It is best to feed in the middle of the fish tank when feeding. Arowana is a meat-type animal. Most arowanas eat frogs, loaches, crickets, goldfish, grasshoppers, shrimps, etc. Arowanas of about 15 cm can be fed with normal mealworms and shrimps (it is best to remove the shrimp swords of shrimps), and can also be fed with 1.5 cm small fish. At this time, arowanas grow rapidly and have an amazing appetite. The number of times and amount of feeding can be appropriately increased. Arowanas over 20 cm can be fed with larger fish, shrimps, loaches, meat pieces and other baits. You can also feed various insects and other live baits, which are all the food that arowanas like, but be careful not to let these baits be contaminated. In addition, viscera, especially livers, are not suitable for feeding arowanas, as their high fat content can cause diseases in arowanas. Among live baits, goldfish is not a good bait. Studies have shown that the infectious diseases or parasites contracted by arowanas that feed exclusively on goldfish in a small aquarium are almost all transmitted by goldfish. It is best to use beef with less fat content for artificial bait. Of course, if you have the conditions, you can buy ready-made special bait for dragon fish. However, when feeding artificial feed at the beginning, dragon fish will be very uncomfortable and need to be trained by artificial feeding. There is a problem of coloring when feeding dragon fish. For example, feeding red arrows or shrimps can play a certain role in the coloring of red dragon fish, because red arrows and shrimps contain red pigment. When young fish under 12 cm have just started to eat raw bait, you can feed them white mealworms that have just shed their shells, shrimps (be sure to remove the head and tail, it is best to peel them into shrimp balls to avoid the hard shell hurting their stomachs), bloodworms and other more palatable baits. Eat small meals and feed four times a day. Male dragon fish usually have a relatively large mouth, while female dragon fish have a small mouth or a spoon-shaped mouth. The color of male dragon fish is usually brighter than that of female dragon fish. This is swim bladder disorder. First lower the water level, do not feed, raise the temperature by two degrees, and rest for a while. 1. First aid measures: When the swim bladder disorder is more serious, soak the fish in 2% salt water for ten minutes, twice a day. 2. Feed allicin, three yellow powder, compound berberine and other anti-inflammatory drugs to treat enteritis. 3. During the treatment period, change the feed, reduce the content of protein and fat in the feed, choose fresh and easily digestible feed, and do not use oxidized, deteriorated and low-quality feed. 4. Do not change too much water at one time, and do not change more than 30% of the water at one time. Add turmeric and heat it up, then see what happens |
