What is the difference between prawns and shrimps?

The shrimp that people usually refer to is the tiger prawn. It has a hard shell with obvious yellow-red stripes, is small in size, tastes crispy and sweet, and has no spines on its forehead (shrimp guns). The appearance of the prawn is similar to that of the tiger prawn, but it is large in size, has spines on its forehead, has hard shrimp meat, and tastes inferior to the shrimp and has no sweetness.

How to distinguish between prawns and shrimps:

1. Prawns

New shrimps are commonly known as Ma shrimps and Jiwei shrimps. Most people call them Jiwei shrimps. Jiwei shrimps are bred in freshwater and cultured in seawater. They are named because of "enclosure culture". Jiwei shrimps look like prawns, but their shells are softer than prawns, and their bodies are not as big as prawns. They are generally the size of a middle finger. The estuary sea area along the coast of Guangdong has a high yield, and they are fat, thin-shelled, and delicious. Juvenile Jiwei shrimps (no more than 6cm) are dark green to dark green, and adult shrimps (more than 6cm) are light brown-yellow, with dense light brown spots on their bodies. Some js in the market use white shrimps (prawns) to impersonate Jiwei shrimps. When choosing, you should pay attention to the color and spots. It is easy to identify.

2. Prawns

An arthropod with a body length of 15-20 cm and a thin, transparent shell. The barbels on the second pair of antennae are very long. The meat is delicious and is one of my country's specialties. It is mainly produced in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Bay. In the past, it was often sold in pairs in the market, so it was called prawns. It is also called prawns.

Penaeid shrimp is a genus of Penaeididae in the superfamily Penaeoidea of the order Decapoda. There are 28 species in the world, 7 species in the Atlantic coast of America, 6 species in the Pacific coast, 14 species in the Indo-West Pacific, 1 species in the Pacific and Mediterranean, and 1 species in West Africa. There are 10 species in China, which live in tropical and subtropical shallow seas. The Penaeid shrimp are large, commonly known as prawns. The adult female is generally 16 to 22 cm long and weighs about 50 to 80 grams. The largest can reach 30 cm and weigh 250 grams. The male is smaller, 13 to 18 cm long and weighs 30 to 50 grams. They are often sold in pairs in northern China, so they are called prawns.

3. The difference between the two:

(1) The appearance of the prawn is similar to that of the tiger prawn, but it is larger, has spines on its forehead, and has hard meat. It tastes worse than the mud shrimp and has no sweetness. Grass shrimp and white shrimp are similar in appearance. Grass shrimp are dark green in color and have a harder skin, while white shrimp are gray in color, larger in size, have thin skin, and no obvious stripes. They are not crispy or sweet. As for sand shrimp, also known as big-headed shrimp, they have thick antennae and a smaller head and tail. They do not look like tiger prawns.

(2) "Jiwei" refers to the cage culture method near the coast. However, the Jiwei shrimp people generally refer to is not white shrimp, but tiger prawn. It has a hard shell with obvious yellow-red stripes, is small in size, tastes crisp and sweet, has no spines on its forehead (shrimp gun), and has a market price of about 100 to 200 yuan. Jiwei shrimp can survive in water temperatures of about 10°C. Due to the restrictions on the growth period and the closure period, the price is generally high from November to April of the following year.
