Whale sharks are a family of the order Porphyria, with only one species, the whale shark Rhincodon typus, which is the largest fish in the world, up to 20 meters long (commonly around 8 meters), with a flat head and wide mouth. Like the wobbegongs and basking sharks, they feed on plankton. Their mouths can open up to 1.5 meters, with 300 rows of tiny teeth, and their gill rakers are sponge-like, which can filter 600 cubic meters of seawater per hour. |
