What do cockroach, mantis, and dung beetle mean?

cockroach

Generally refers to insects belonging to the order Blattaria (scientific name), belonging to the phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, order Blattaria, commonly known as cockroaches, which are common medical insects.

Only about a dozen species of these will invade human homes. A few species are kept as pets and used as pet food. Most species can only be seen in wild mountain streams, forests, or insect museums. The most common cockroaches in homes include the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), the Australian cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae), and the short-winged cockroach (Neostylopyag rhombifolia), which are about 5.0 cm (1.97 in) long. The smaller ones include the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), the Japanese cockroach (Blattella bisignata), and the Asian cockroach (Blattella asahinai), which are about 1.5 cm (0.59 in) long. Cockroaches in tropical areas are generally larger. Domestic cockroaches are generally nocturnal and afraid of light. Wild cockroaches vary in species, and their phototropism can be positive or negative.

The body is flat, dark brown, and usually medium in size. The head is small and mobile. The antennae are long and filamentous, and the compound eyes are well developed. The wings are flat, the forewings are leathery and the hindwings are membranous. The forewings and hindwings are basically the same size, covering the back of the abdomen; some species are wingless. They are not good at flying, but can run fast. Incomplete metamorphosis. They lay eggs in egg sheaths. There are about 6,000 species, mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas, living in the wild or indoors.

Praying Mantis

The scientific name is mantis, also known as knife mantis, an invertebrate, a carnivorous insect. In ancient Greece, people regarded mantis as a prophet. Because the mantis's forearms raised look like a praying girl, it is also called the praying insect.

Except for the polar regions, mantises are widely distributed all over the world, especially in tropical regions. There are about 2,000 known species in the world. About 147 species are known in China. They include the Chinese broadsword mantis, the narrow-winged broadsword mantis, the broad-axe mantis, the brown mantis, the thin-winged mantis, the green mantis, etc. Mantises are important natural enemies of agricultural pests.

Dung Beetle

Commonly known as dung beetle, it belongs to the family Scarabaeidae in the order Coleoptera. It is a medium-sized insect with a black or dark brown body. Dung beetles can use the polarization of moonlight to locate themselves to help them find food. They have a certain tendency to phototropism. There are more than 20,000 species of dung beetles in the world, distributed on any continent except Antarctica. The most famous dung beetle lives in Egypt and is 1 to 2.5 cm long. The largest dung beetle in the world is the giant dung beetle, which is 10 cm long. Most dung beetles are coprophagous, feeding on animal feces, and are known as "scavengers of nature."

There are three types of insects:

Cockroaches refer to insects belonging to the order Blattaria (scientific name), which belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, and order Blattaria. They are commonly known as cockroaches and are common medical insects [1]. Among them, only about a few dozen species invade human homes, and a few species are kept as pets and used as food for pets. Most species can only be seen in the wild, in mountain streams, forests, or in insect museums.

Dung beetle (qiāng lang, English Dung Beetle) is commonly known as dung beetle (shǐ ké làng), belonging to the family Scarabaeidae of the order Coleoptera. It is a medium-sized insect with a black or dark brown body. Dung beetles can use the polarization of moonlight to locate themselves to help them find food. They have a certain tendency to phototropism. There are more than 20,000 species of dung beetles in the world, distributed on any continent except Antarctica. Cockroach eggs[1] A female cockroach has a bean-pod-shaped thing called an ootheca at the end of its tail, in which the eggs are laid. A female cockroach can produce as few as 10 to as many as 90 oothecae; each ootheca can hatch as few as 10 to as many as 50 baby cockroaches, depending on the species of cockroach.

The female lays eggs in a special gelatinous capsule, forming an ootheca (egg pod). The ootheca is produced by the female's secretions, is smooth, hard, and waterproof, and can protect the development of the embryo inside.

Unmated females can also produce egg cases, but generally cannot hatch nymphs. However, some species such as American cockroaches and sugarcane cockroaches have parthenogenesis, that is, females can produce fertile eggs without mating.

The behavior of cockroaches in laying egg sheaths varies from species to species. There are three main ways for indoor cockroaches: 1. One to two days after laying egg sheaths, females choose a relatively hidden place, bite a depression on the surface of an object, lay the egg sheath in it, and then cover the egg sheath with sticky saliva mixed with chewed wood chips or paper scraps. Sometimes saliva is used to stick the egg sheath directly to the habitat, such as cabinets, wooden (paper) boxes, corners of tables or piles of debris. This type of egg sheath contains sufficient nutrients to meet the needs of embryonic development. The laying of egg sheaths by American cockroaches and black-breasted cockroaches belongs to this type; 2. After the female produces the egg sheath, it keeps dragging it at the end of the abdomen and does not lay it until the nymph is about to hatch from the egg sheath, and then it falls off from the mother. During the development of the embryo in the egg, it constantly obtains the required water and nutrients from the mother, and the egg sheath is carried by the mother insect, so it can be better protected. If the egg sheath falls off early, the eggs in it cannot hatch. The egg-laying method of German cockroaches belongs to this type; 3. The female first produces a thin and soft egg sheath, in which she lays her eggs. After the egg-laying is completed, the egg sheath shrinks into the "brooding chamber" in the body and remains there until the nymphs hatch. This is a form of ovoviviparity of cockroaches. The egg-laying method of sugarcane cockroaches belongs to this type.
